I was under the impression that Tobias's Direct Show filters would allow Windows Media player to play Ogg Vorbis streams, but after testing it here, apparently it doesn't. Does anyone know if there is anyway of making WMP play vorbis streams? The company I'm involved with who will be creating thousands of internet stations will most likely need WMP to play the streams, since it is the most used player software. I know most of you are anti-Microsoft/Windows, as I am, but this really needs to happen as soon as possible if Ogg Vorbis is going to become mainstream. Perhaps Xiph needs to employ someone to do it if there are no volunteers. indeed, this is still the problem number one with voribs/ogg -- nobody can use it. whereas mp3 is now totally "mainstream", ogg is still very much unknown and for most impossible to use. Will Windows Media and Real Audio ever be set to play ogg streams? Isn't the whole concept of open source against their principles? And Winamp? Are they really sincere in getting the next version working with ogg as well as Winamp 2.8 does? boink. > I was under the impression that Tobias's Direct Show filters would allow > Windows Media player to play Ogg Vorbis streams, but after testing it > here, apparently it doesn't. Does anyone know if there is anyway of > making WMP play vorbis streams? At one point, I had Media XW and Tobias's Direct Show filters installed on my win98 machine. Ogg playback worked fine with just Media XW installed, but streaming would work untill I installed the DS filters (as is supposed to happen). Didn't really use WMP at all anyway, so it didnt matter. Then I upgraded to WM9, and it all went to hell. WMP refused to play almost anything including the reception of streaming ogg files, so I had to resort to downloading Real One. It also messed around with media playback in Kazaalite. Thankfully I couldn't give a crap about WMP, but this would be a problem for almost everyone else. Try using JOrbis- it works well as a client but has a JRE requirement that some computers may not have (like my college network), again causing problems.>And Winamp? Are they really sincere in getting the next version working >with ogg as well as Winamp 2.8 does?Theres a beta of Winamp 2.9 out- haven't tried it out myself, as I've no need to. but here's the link anyway (found on Afterdawn.com's newsletter) http://www.nullsoft.com/cookie/ might be worth looking into. <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, send a message to 'vorbis-request@xiph.org' containing only the word 'unsubscribe' in the body. I can confirm that Tobias' DS filters work fine in my Wimp 6.4 install - I do not have a higher version installed to compare. Myles -----Original Message----- From: Andy D. I'll email Tobias and hopefully find out. I know more people that use realplayer than use WMP as their primary music player (on the other hand, that's 1 vs. 0 out of a sample size of several dozen... which suggests that the people I know aren't entirely typical). Since the directshow filters are closed source, we can't help with them at all (I don't think any of the developers ever claimed they had any ability to receive streams - though I suspect if they don't it's just a bug). I would be in the same ballpark as you, Ross. We are looking at icecast2/ices as a replacement for our RealAudio streams, as the licenses we have will expire VERY soon, and we frankly don't have the money to go dump on new ones. We're looking at serving literally thousands of listeners, most of which have RealPlayer installed at home or at work, but have never heard or played with WinAmp, FooBar2000, or XMMS. A plugin for WMP 8 or 9 would be EXCELLENT. I too was lead to believe the DirectShow filter would work, but I have yet to be able to make it do so with a stream... I might be willing to put some $$ toward making it work as well, and leave it GPLed, if it can be done reasonably.
