Icecast - Aug 2004 - unable to set gid

my icecast install was working fine until today when it died 
inexplicably. now it says

peter@yurt:~$ /etc/init.d/icecast-server start
Starting /usr/sbin/icecast...
start-stop-daemon: Unable to set gid to 102

what the HELL is gid

icecast is saying:

"Group ID" ... if you want to run it as your user, disable the option
to
change any UIDs/GIDs. Only root can do that (e.g. start it as root and
have it drop privileges to some user like 'nobody' or an
'icecast' user
or whatever).
