CentOS - Mar 2008 - RE: Choice of RAR/PAR utility?

What is everyone using in the way of a 
rar/par utility?  Does anyone use this to preserve important files?  Google did
not help me much here.

rar is a proprietary format.  There is a free program to unpack a rar archive,
but if you wish to create them you are required to purchase the program from
the outfit that makes it.

I doubt it.  tar and the like are much more common in the world of
Linux/Unix/what-have-you.
