I''m not able to script/console to my rails app after upgrading from
ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04

Have you checked your Gemfile to make sure it is specifing the correct version of Rails? If you have a Gemfile.lock, I would delete that as it has the locks of all the gem versions from the last time you booted the application which was before the upgrade.
