I have an application done in web_brick server . it''s in my pc but I want the rest of people using different pc can access to it. Mine is typical default 127.0.0.1:3000 what is the procedure to make this happen? thank you. sammy rails-request-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org 写道: Send Rails mailing list submissions to rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails or, via email, send a message with subject or body ''help'' to rails-request-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org You can reach the person managing the list at rails-owner-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Rails digest..." Anyone kind enough to read please give me any insight. Basically I need to update a series of record on table work_times The work_times table has following fields: id, check_in, check_out, lunch , user_id, signed. The field signed is either 0 or 1 and 1 means the time sheet has been signed. Another table is users which has field login, password, role_id, signed_by, signed_by represents who can sign teh user id''s time sheet. Finally there is a table called roles that classify users in 3 roles. One user has many work_times, and each work_times belong to one user. each user belongs to one role. and one role has many users. Now I am a user A who is looking at person B''s work_time records: Using the tutorial 4 days of rails as an example, I create a sign.rhtml form as below(excerpt) ''sign_update'', :id=>params[:id] %> %> which the _signatures.rhtml reads as: (excerpt) . Pressing the button Submit Signature will lead to a controller action sign_update which I defined as belows: def sign_update @params[:work_time].each { |work_time.id, attr| work_time = WorkTime.find(work_time.id) work_time.update_attribute(:signed, attr[:signed]) } redirect_to(:action=>''list'', :id=>session[:user].id) end ------------------ The sign.rhtml seems to render correctly as when i look at the sources of html I have something like this: [input] [input] ...... ...... [input] [input] (12, 13...is the id of work_times table) (I don''t know why but in the tutorial I saw the id field doesn;t have [:id] inside. do I make mistake here? ) but error comes out when I submit the form when sign_update action is invoked. it says: undefined local variable or method `work_time'' for # /app/controllers/user_controller.rb:61:in `sign_update''/app/controllers/user_controller.rb:61:in `each''/app/controllers/user_controller.rb:61:in `sign_update''script/server:4 undefined local variable or method `work_time'' for # /app/controllers/user_controller.rb:61:in `sign_update''/app/controllers/user_controller.rb:61:in `each''/app/controllers/user_controller.rb:61:in `sign_update''script/server:49 Anyone knows the reason would you please let me know? If you expect internal trafic only and lowish volume, consider running webbrick as a service using daemon. I use FireDaemon to run the built in server Trac and it is working very well Ken

Re: question on hosting a web-brick server in local PC among a microsoft network
What you probably want is for WEBrick to bind to http://0.0.0.0:3000 address. For a while this is default address so if using latest release you should do nothing. Simply point browsers from other machines to http://yourmachinename:3000 and it should work. s c wrote:> Hi all, > i know very little about networking and would someone please kindly give > me an advice? > I have an application done in web_brick server . it''s in my pc but I > want the rest of people using different pc can access to it. Mine is typical default 127.0.0.1:3000 what is the procedure to make this happen?Hi Sammy, I would guess that if your network is very small (such as an office LAN or similar) you probably don''t have a local DNS server. If you don''t know what I''m talking about, chances are you don''t have one! My network here is tiny, only 4 machines, but I''ve set up a local DNS server for convenience, because it''s very useful to have - in the long term, you might wish to consider having one. Anyway, don''t worry about that for now, because if you don''t have local DNS server, there is another way! What you need to do is give each machine a way to know how to find your machine on the network, and this can be done using a "hosts" file on every machine that needs access. Depending on your windows version, the hosts file may be located at one of the following locations: Win2k or WinXP Pro: c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts WinXP Home: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts Win98 / WinME etc: c:\windows\hosts The file is called simply "hosts" with no file extension, so for example be very careful not to save it as "hosts.txt", if your editor automatically appends a file extension, since that won''t work. If in doubt, you need to disable the hiding of file extensions in Windows Explorer to make sure. In your hosts file, you''ll need to add an entry containing your machine''s network IP address, and a name. It might look something like this: 192.168.0.1 sammy ...or... 192.168.0.1 sammy.mshome.net sammy ...if your machines are running the very basic Windows home networking stuff. To find the IP address (that x.x.x.x number above), check your Windows network settings. You could also run the "ipconfig" command from a DOS prompt, as that will tell you. Ultimately, you might have to change your machine''s network settings to make sure it always takes the same IP address, since otherwise your hosts files on the other machines may stop working if your machine''s IP address changes. Note that 127.0.0.1 is not your machine''s network IP address, since 127.0.0.1 always refers to the "localhost" on every machine, which is basically so it can talk to itself. If you were to tell the other machines that your machine address is 127.0.0.1, then they will also end up talking to themselves, and not your machine. Hopefully if this has worked out, you should be able to access your Rails app from the other machines at an address like: http://sammy:3000/ Or, on your machine, you could run WEBrick on port 80 (standard HTTP port) using the following: ruby script/server -p80 ... and then the other machines can access: http://sammy/ No doubt if you are very new to networking you will encounter some problems, but hopefully that''s a brief but detailed enough explanation to point you in the right direction! If your machine is running a personal firewall such as ZoneAlarm, you may have to change some settings to allow other people to connect. Longer term, if your network expands or gets more complex, a local DNS and DHCP server can save you a lot of time and stress, since it will take care of IP addresses and so on for you. However, it''s not the easiest thing, so I won''t cover that now. If there are any technical mistakes in this email, I apologise, but I barely use Windows these days and in fact don''t have my Windows box switched on right now for reference. Also please note that you follow my instructions totally at your own risk, and that if you''re a novice you possibly run the risk of messing up your network settings - in that case, just delete or rename the hosts files, and that should fix things at least back to how they were. In general, computer networking isn''t the easy at all, and many of us have spent hours banging our heads against brick walls in order to get the hang of it, so don''t despair just yet! Good luck on your adventure! Cheers, ~Dave -- Dave Silvester Rent-A-Monkey Website Development Web: http://www.rentamonkey.com/

If you have Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you''ll have to open the appropriate port in Windows Firewall.
