Rails - Aug 2005 - urls and users

I am have just started to learn Ruby and Rails, can someone point me
to the method used by basecamp for handling users e.g

  fred.cool-domain.com -> where user fred has registered on my cool-domain

so I can display fred''s information

If someone could kindly point me to some Ruby code
