I''ve been trying to get in all the rails programming I can here lately. I come from a PHP background (4+ years), so I''m really enjoying programming with rails. I''d like to see if anyone else in rails-land would be interested in collaborating on a small project(s). I have a few ideas for some applications that I would like to create, but I mainly just want to find like minds who are wanting to learn more about rails in a no pressure, lets ''make something cool and exciting'' atmosphere. My ruby/rails knowledge is growing by the day, but I still have so much to learn. I''m working on the Typo team as the designer/front- end stuff and I''m also planning to do some other things on that project with Tobias and gang. If you think you''d be interested in creating something cool with rails and have a boiling pot of creativity just waiting to explode ;-) then lets make something happen! -Justin Palmer EncyteMedia.com

It is the biggest end-user Ruby application according to RubyForge download counters, and it was written by nextangle himself :) If you do (or anybody else does), here are the things that Instiki might use right now: 1. File Uploads (some of it is done, but the I wasn''t quite happy with the interaction design and so we kicked it from 0.10 release). 2. A sprinkling of Ajax in strategically chosen locations. 3. In-browser acceptance test suite (I''ve started doing it with WATIR lately, look at test/watir). 4. Keyword-based search There are some other ideas at http://dev.instiki.org/report/4 -- Best regards, Alexey Verkhovsky Ruby Forum: http://ruby-forum.org (moderator) RForum: http://rforum.andreas-s.net (co-author) Instiki: http://instiki.org (maintainer)
Hey Justin, I would like to join you. I come from the .NET world (2+ years). I have some ideas I want to implement using Ruby/Rails, but I had no time yet because some .NET stuff I have to finish. Congrats for the Typo stuff. It rocks ;-) Justin Palmer wrote:> I''ve been trying to get in all the rails programming I can here > lately. Hi Justin, Have you given any consideration to commercial ventures based on Rails? I''m formerly a Linux kernel/ filesystems programmer residing in Pittsburgh, PA. I worked for a startup company called Spinnaker Networks, which was acquired by Network Appliance in 2004. So I''m a bit new to web development, but enjoying it quite a bit with Rails (though I had some prior Ruby experience). Anyway, I''ve been surveying the landscape of Rails stuff (obviously, Basecamp and Backpack, but Odeo has gotten a lot of press lately, even from Fortune magazine), and I''m also getting the itch to get started again with another startup. I was an early employee at Spinnaker, but I''d really like to be the founder, or one of the founders, of a startup my next go around. So, I''m always looking for contacts and like minded people. Drop me a line if you feel like chatting sometime. Joe On May 9, 2005, at 1:32 AM, Justin Palmer wrote:> I''ve been trying to get in all the rails programming I can here > lately. Hi, sounds to me like we are of like minds. I''m developing an application focusing on the real-estate investor community. There are very few applications specifically catered to this crowd, and many are willing to pony up big bucks for seminars, materials, etc., that they never use. I''m doing initial prototype work and requirements gathering right now. I have a meeting tomorrow with a test "user" after which I''ll be processing his feedback and putting up a demo. Does this interest you at all? Don''t feel bad if it doesn''t. I''m just thrilled I can learn Ruby/Rails with a paying client. (Even if they aren''t paying in $$$-- it''s payment in kind, helping my close on my first house. :-) ) Cheers, Jim
Whoops, meant that for personal consumption, but if any of you are interested, you can let me know as well. Justin - I''m developing an application focused on the real-estate investor community. There''s a potential competitor coming to market soon, but if we beat them out the door, we''ll make all the dough ourselves... I hear they''re willing to pony up big bucks. And I do have a semi-urgent need for a Shoutcast log analyzer, so that would probably be my first target log format... Interested? I''ve done nothing in Rails beyond the tutorials yet; my school year just ended so today I''m finally free. (In a past life, I did lots of more complicated stuff.) Drop me a line if you like. Justin (and others), I am working on a Rails application for my business but would love to work on a collaborative project also. I am by no means a Rails expert but have no lack of ideas and am also very excited by the flowering world of web applications, many of which seem to be Rails-powered. And I am very interested in graphic and interaction design. Perhaps the next step would be to find some way of discussing project ideas in a forum where everyone could contribute... maybe a wiki or a forum, or a mailing list, but maybe outside of the official Rails list/website. -raymond On May 8, 2005, at 10:32 PM, Justin Palmer wrote:> I''ve been trying to get in all the rails programming I can here > lately. Hansson, and which happens to be a real project with a five-digit download count? Nothing that doesn''t involve females or boats, in my humble opinion. :) If you agree, and you have a designer''s eye, please email me and/or sign up to instiki-users mailing list on RubyForge. -- Best regards, Alexey Verkhovsky Ruby Forum: http://ruby-forum.org (moderator) RForum: http://rforum.andreas-s.net (co-author) Instiki: http://instiki.org (maintainer)
Wow, I see there is a pretty good bit of interest in this area. I would like to do some hosted solution type things I''m also interested in doing a commercial application. My initial idea, and something that I''m currently in the first stages of is a type of ''Amazon meets del.icio.us'' project. It also allows you to profit from bookmarks with your Amazon associates ID. This would be a hosted service of course. I''m really intrigued by the social based applications such as 43things, del.icio.us, flickr, upcoming.org, etc. Alexey, Instiki is a very nice application, I''ve had my eye on it for a while. Currently though i''m more interested in starting a new project with a couple of people. I''ll definitely submit any patches or contributions I can if we solve some of those problems along the way. I''m not sure about a real estate application, I have 0 knowledge of real estate other than basic stuff you pick up in day to day life. I guess I should refine the scope some more, but please feel free to use this thread to hook up with others, it seems there are numerous people looking to join up with others. To refine the scope of what I''m interested in doing - A repeat of above , I really like the social networking/grouping type applications. I didn''t expect to get more than a few responses, so I obviously can''t contact everybody ( a madhouse! ), but I will be in touch with some of you guys. Also, if you haven''t responded yet and are interested in some of the things I posted above, please send me an email or contact me on IRC. IRC #rubyonrails, #typo : Caged email: justin - at - encytemedia dot com Best of luck to everybody looking to find a partner! As you see from Alexey''s post, there are numerous open source projects looking for contributors. I''m interested in doing something new as well and wouldn''t mind collaborating. I especially like the idea of a low-startup cost commercial venture (I''m very interested in the types of businesses that can be grown on the internet with almost no startup costs. Not neccesarily to get rich off of, but to see how small a self-sustaining organization can get), but free stuff can be fun as well. I''m currently building an online store/order tracking system for a client which will be operating by summer''s end, but if the ideas flying around are interesting enough, then I can make time. I''ve been on rails since late october though was off of the scene from february until april. I''m actively developing with it now and am pretty familiar with the core API''s and Ajax. I have just this week began the process of designing a Ruby equivalent to JPGraph (http://www.aditus.nu/jpgraph/) of php fame. This is one area that I think is seriously lacking in the Ruby area. If there are people who want to work on this, drop me a line, perhaps we can collaberate. Hi, I''m quite interested in collaborating on something creative and innovative. I''m not too interested in re-inventing the wheel and building mundane web apps (I''ll leave that for the day job), but I''m particularly keen to work on something new that hasn''t been done before. I''m at the planning stage for an idea now, but I don''t want to mention it in public just yet. I will however need to recruit some help in developing the project, so if anyone thinks they might be interested (on a co-founder basis) drop me a private email and I''ll discuss it with you. I think it could have great potential, and haven''t seen anything else quite like it. I''m also interested in working on other projects -- in a nutshell, anything that''s "cool" :-) If anyone would like to chat, I''m on MSN as flammablescarecrow-PkbjNfxxIARBDgjK7y7TUQ@public.gmane.org or AIM/iChat as benlm0 .
