I''ve always been curious as to why Amazon would invest in 43 things, rather than just set up their own 43things type site. The concept isn''t very difficult to program, (especially using Rails!), so why wouldn''t Amazon just set up a clone? For all intents and purposes, they have limitless amounts of cash and a massive development team, they could have churned out something in a few weeks. just curious to hear people''s thoughts on this.
Investing is done because of the people, not just the idea. Amazon saw that these guys "get it" and want to see what else they can do and come up with, both in terms of what can be integrated into Amazon and in completely general terms. You are right that the concept isn''t very difficult to program; what Amazon is investing in is the people who come up with the concepts. They can always buy them later ;) Sascha
Whatever they want with it will be public when they''re ready to tell, and i''m sure it won''t be as evil as some people think this deal is. Why did del.icio.us <http://del.icio.us> get $? To be further developed and then see what they can do... There''s no use in trying to guess the purpose yet...
