This is because the X11 font metrics are used in conjunction with
PostScript fonts. The mismatch doesn't show with the usual plot
labels, but it does look pretty bad with mathematics.
General help is on the way. We are about to completely rewite the
lower levels of the graphics system to support multiple active devices
and rather more interactive graphics. This will change the way that
print.plot and save.plot will work (they may disappear and be replaced
by menu selections in the graphics window).

I think the functionality is there, its just called "root". We will
change the name to "sqrt".
