Matrix package: band matrix
...diagonal/superdiagonal and so on. Since the Matrix will be 10^5 x 10^5 or so, with perhaps 10-20 non-zero elements above the diagonal per row, I can't do it by constructing a full matrix and then using the band() function to subset it to a band matrix. Any suggestions? -thomas Thomas Lumley Assoc. Professor, Biostatistics tlumley at u.washington.edu University of Washington, Seattle

R-alpha: CRAN source/contrib
I've put all ``current'' add-on packages into CRAN's source/contrib tree and created an INDEX file (attached below). As you can see, currently we have acepack bootstrap ctest date e1071 fracdiff gee jpn snns splines survival4 (Yes, e1071 and jpn are new ... more on the latter in a later mail.) Order of messgaes/ missing messages
I am curious as to why I quite often receive responses to questions on the help before receiving the actual question. For example Mr Graves has responded to Mr Lumley's response to Mr Wegelin yet I ave not received Mr. Lumley's post while I have received the other two. Sampling Weights and lmer() update?
Perhaps I am not looking in the right place, but I am looking for a way to use lmer() to run a multilevel model that incorporates sampling weights. I have used the Lumley survey package to use sampling weights in the past, but according to post I found online from Thomas Lumley in mid-2012, R is currently not equipped to be able to do this. His post is here: http://r.789695.n4.nabble.com/sampling-weights-for-multilevel-models-tp4632947p4632955.html Does anyone kno...

error on uneven recycling?
...tiple of shorter object length can't be made into an error? I realise it was there in S-PLUS, but since it produces a warning there can't be many examples on CRAN or Bioconductor using it, and I can't think of any situation where it would be used deliberately. -thomas -- Thomas Lumley Professor of Biostatistics University of Auckland

Hardware for a new Workstation for best performance using R
Hi, we are looking for a new workstation for big datasets/applications (easily up to 100'000 records and up to 300 Variables) using R. As an example: Variable Selection for a multivariate regression using stepAIC. What is the best configuration for a workstation to reach a high performance level for computing with R? Single core or multi core (is R together with nws package really able to

eval(parse(text vs. get when accessing a function
Dear All, I've read Thomas Lumley's fortune "If the answer is parse() you should usually rethink the question.". But I am not sure it that also applies (and why) to other situations (Lumley's comment http://tolstoy.newcastle.edu.au/R/help/05/02/12204.html was in reply to accessing a list). Suppose I have simil...

any way to set X11() device geometry (screen offsets)?
I am writing an R program to plot data as part of a real time display in a network operations center (NOC). Is there any way, when starting an X11 device in R, to control the location of the plotting window on the screen? I want to put up nine x11 plot windows at different places on the display, and I want the operators to be able to rearrange the window as they see fit by mousing around

better way of recoding factors in data frame?
Hi all, I apologize in advance for the length of this post, but I wanted to make sure I was clear. I am trying to merge two dataframes that share a number of rows (but some are unique to each data frame). Each row represents a subject in a study. The problem is that sex is coded differently in the two, including the way missing values are represented. Here is an example of the merged dataframe:
