Thanks for the response........my answers to your 3 questions:
1) no- swat was not on my distribution cds (the whole reason for this
issue)
2) yes that would be possible with the --nodeps option, but I don't
like to override pre-requisites whenever possible
3) I guess I could do that as well, but would prefer just to get a swat
that will work with my samba
As it ended up, I was able to download/install samba-swat-3.0.0-15.i386.rpm
It seems to work fine so I will be ok with this version.

You have three possible choices:
1) See if there's a SWAT RPM on the Red Hat ES 3.0 CDs. If so, install
that.
2) Install the SWAT 3.0.0-test RPM with the --nodeps option.
3) Uninstall the Red Hat ES version of Samba and install the official
version from the Samba site.
