Hi, I'm a new comer in Samba. I installed samba V1.9.18p1 on Digital Unix machine as Samba server. I can login and access shares on the Unix server from one of the NT servers, but I CAN'T login from any NT workstations on the network. On NT workstation, from Network Neighborhood, I double click the Unix server name, I get a pop-up window and type in the Unix login name and password in the "Connect As" and "Password" fields, but I get message says "This account is not authorized to login in at this station". Is there any configuration I have to set up on Unix server or NT station, Please help me out. Thanks. I was able to install and connect my printer to My unix box using samba successfully. The only problem i am facing right now is that whenever i give the lp -d hp filename.where hp is my LASER printer and filename is any file i wish to print. As soon as i give this command the printer prints the file once and again it starts printing the same file untill i interrupt. I would appreciate your help regarding this. Thanks and Regds Richard (Samba user)

Hello my name is Tiziano Demaria and I'm sorry for my English I've installed LINUX RED-HAT 6.0 with kernel 2.2.7. I've several troubles with samba server. The network configuration is the following: * Server LINUX * three WIN-95 client machines The web server work correctly such as POP-3, SMTP and IMAP. But.....if I'd like to connect server (e.g. to share directories and files), the WIN machines ask me a password.......and i don't know what to say. I've controlled smb.conf files, but I've not found particualr anomalies...I've also tried to make different and various settings, but the result is the same: if i want to share a unit, win ask me a password, and I've not set any password! I send to You my smb.conf for an analisys. I'd like to share the dir: /home/samba Do you can help me please ? I'm waiting an Your answer. Hello, I hope I am at the right place. I have installed Red Hat 6 and I want my machine to be a NT file and print server. I can access the public directory OK but I cannot print to the server printer, I get the message "failed to open file". I can print a test page from the config setup screen. The other ptoblem is I cannot access my own directory. I am asked for a password and when I provide it, it just doesn't work. Any help would be appreciated, I have spent a week on this already. Thanks Gary Richards
Does anyone know what SMBtconX is? It fails when i try to see my shares..... Mvh.// Daniel Nilsson
Daniel Nilsson wrote:> > Does anyone know what SMBtconX is? > It fails when i try to see my shares.....The SMB command for "Tree Connect". It is the point at which you actually connect to the share. In user mode security, there are three basic steps to connect to a share with respect to SMB - Negotiate the protocol to use between the client and server - User validation in the Session setup - Actually mounting the share using a tree connection request Possible reasons for failing would be * the share you are trying to connect to does not actually exist. Check your spelling and syntax in smb.conf * permissions on the share (or the file level) do not allow you to access it Cheers, jerry ________________________________________________________________________ Gerald ( Jerry ) Carter Engineering Network Services Auburn University jerry@eng.auburn.edu http://www.eng.auburn.edu/users/cartegw "...a hundred billion castaways looking for a home." - Sting "Message in a Bottle" ( 1979 )

Hi! How do I join a samba list for beginners etc? I want to be able to use linux as a server on our win9x network instead of buying NT. Thanks Godfrey //Sarah, Godfrey, Matthew -- Tel: +256-41-566340 -- Kampala,UGANDA //Fax: 001(561) 258-8293 [Received as special email attachment]
Good Evening! I am using Samba 2.0.5a on an Ultra10 Server running Solaris 7 as a file server for NT 4.0 (sp4) machines. I just upgraded from Solaris 6.2 and Samba 1.9,17p4. I do not have much experience with UNIX but learning as I hit many walls! My problem is with performance. With the older version of Samba, the client systems could PLOT GRAPHIC DATA much faster. We are using home grown software that can open many files from the server and the data would come up the instant you request information. Now with the new version of Samba - the more files open, the slower the response time. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Cindy Pedersen
Hi, My sincere apologies for asking a rather elementary question, but do you have documentation on how to install and configure SAMBA on Linux 6.1 and what is needed on the PC side? Thanking you in advance. Kind regards - Valdar Rudman

I got it from: www.sunfreeware.com (my unix version:Solaris2.5.1 SUN sparc) but I found my samba version is 1.7(perhaps) and now the lastest version is 2.0.7 ,so I downloaded the latest-samba from www.samba.org (source) when I configured it the system showed: : #./configure creating cache ./config.cache checking for gcc ........gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O) works ....no configure: error: installation or configuration problem : C compiler cannot create executables My workstation not have C compiler . How can I do? Do you have the latest-samba not for compiling for downloading? Now in win 9X when I go to add printer (it is there) it says I have the wrong driver loaded and asks to install the right one (this I do, cuae if I don't it exits) and all goes right (so I thought). Now when I print it says its printig on the win9X box but nothing ever comes across the network. The wierd thing is that there is no error posted. Hi: I have a question about samba. I have a SUN workstation and several PCs in our lab . One of my PCs have a printer (style:epson stylus color 300) I want to share the print with my SUN,so I install the samba2.0.7(binary).It run very well. I find the samba2.0.7 has no smbprint.sysv ,so I copy it from samba1.9(maybe),and move it to the samba path: /opt/samba # ls /opt/samba bin/ man/ lib/ swat/ doc/ license/ smbprint.sysv and I modify the smbprint.sysv # vi /opt/samba/smbprint.sysv set : server = lxf (lxf is the netbios name of the PC which has the printer) service = EPSON (its shared printer name) passwd = "" (no passwd) and I modify the script add "bin": ( echo translate echo "print -" cat $" ) | /opt/samba/bin/smbclient "\\\\$server\\%service" .... here I add bin $passwd -N -P > /dev/null exit $? then : # lpadmin -p epson_printer -v /dev/null -i /opt/samba/smbprint.sysv # enable epson_printer # accept epson_printer it runs well. I use admintool to set the epson_printer default # admintool then I restart the Samba daemons when I usr # lp text <filename> it show : request id is epson_printer-1(1 file(s)) It looks like right but the printer has no reaction!!!!!!!!!! (The printer is no wrong,I use very well) and when I input: # lpstat -p -l it shows: printer epson_printer is idle enable since Thursday September 28 16:15:29 CST 2000 available Form mounted: Contant types: simple Printer types: unknown Description: Connect:direct Interface:/opt/samba/./smbprint.sysv on fault:write to root once After fault:continue Users allowed: (all) Forms allowed: (none) Banner required Character sets: (none) Default pitch Default page size Default port settings: the up is all. I have no printer with SUN ,so my smb.conf didn't include [printers] this part, and I have set no items correlative to printer (such as load printers = yes) Could you give me a hand? Apart from Peter Samuelson archive mailing list at "http://samba.cadcamlab.org/lists" is there an official searchable version anywhere? This was available once but seems to have gone away. Any pointers would be helpfully thanks

We have a stop gap solution that we are working on. Until we get that one up, you can download the uncompressed mail files if you want for offline searching. (The printer is no wrong,I use very well) and when I input: # lpstat -p -l it shows: printer epson_printer is idle enable since Thursday September 28 16:15:29 CST 2000 available Form mounted: Contant types: simple Printer types: unknown Description: Connect:direct Interface:/opt/samba/smbprint.sysv on fault:write to root once After fault:continue Users allowed: (all) Forms allowed: (none) Banner required Character sets: (none) Default pitch Default page size Default port settings: the up is all. Is the file "smbprint.sysv" wrong? I don't know. Could you give me the file :smbprint.sysv? Because I have no printer with SUN , my smb.conf didn't include [printers] this part, and I have set no items correlative to printer (such as load printers = yes) I have no way to do this. Hi everybody! I'm having an anoying problem with Samba. This is the scenario: Unix HP-UX 10.20 Authentication through NIS Samba Server 2.0.3 NT 4 (SP5) or Windows 2000 clients. Situation: Once in a while one of the users can't map their directory at the samba server. It keeps asking user and password (it shouldn't because the configuration we have never ask for those). Even though the users enter their Unix names and passwords they aren't able to connect. The problem gets pretty awful when a user has to reset his/her machine. At next logon his/her NT 4 /Windows 2000 gets locked and they can't log in their Windows accounts. This doesn't seem to happen for on particular reason. We couldn't re-create this error. The smbd.log gives me these two messages for every refused connection [2000/11/03 13:17:25, 0] smbd/uid.c:(104) Couldn't set effective gid to -2 currently set to (real=0,eff=0) [2000/11/03 13:17:25, 0] smbd/service.c:(425) Can't become connected user! I have no idea of what's the reason for the account locked and all that. Can anybody help me??? Thank you, ------------------------------------------------------- Viviana V. Hi Everybody, I have a problem in Samba. I created one shae in linux and gave the full rights permission to all the users. But from the Windows, I can able to write into the root directory - thet means into the parent directory only. If i try to copy some fles into a subdirectory inside the share, it doesn't allow me to copy and tells error. Is there any settings to give the whole share the write permissions applicable to the all sub directories into that. Please advice me. Hi Everybody, Please help me in the bad situation i have now. I'm explaining my problem. I installed samba server in RedHat 6.2 with the /opt directory as a share. I am able to access the share from either WinNT or Win98. I can write into the /opt directory. I have somr subdirectories in /opt. Only problem is i couldn't write into the subdirectories in the /opt share. I tried by giving full rights to /opt share and assigned full permissions to the users also. Can anyone tell any solution over this. And is any settings there to give full write permissions to the single share so that we can write into subsequent directories in the share. Pl advice me what to do in the bad situation. Thnx Ramesh. ------------------------------------------------- Vaseline Lipguard Keep Smiling This mail sent through : http://mail.sify.com
I have been trying to get samba 2.0.7 to run on my HP LH 6000 under SCO 5.0.5. We upgraded and are in the process of configuring the server to go live. I previously configured samba 2.0.7 to run on the same server using SCO 5.0.2. Since changing to SCO 5.0.5 I can't get the nmbd daemon to run. I can get the smbd daemon to run. I have stepped through the slue of documents put nothing has worked. Netbios is not running from another program that I can find. The port does not seem to be listening, and I can get it to a listening state with samba. Below are load reports, smb.conf and the nmbd log using level 10 debug. Generally the best source I have found is the various newsgroups, usually comp.sys.<insert you Unix here> or something similar. Check with your ISP they usually have a news server which covers these groups pretty well. hey, I'm not too sure if this is the proper mailing list for this, but from what I read, it is. Is there some "idiot-proof" HOWTO/doc/etc for sharing a simple hard drive under windows to a linux client? On a win2k machine, I have the "d drive" shared as a share called SEC. I am trying to upgrade from samba 1.9.18p10 to either samba 2.2.1 or samba-2.2.2; besides the additional functionality, I was told that I needed one of these for Win2K functionality. After installing the new version 2.2.1, my client machines can no longer connect to their shares, personal or public shares. I have a smbpasswd file which includes the machine names of the clients along with logins. This file was generated using the convert script. The permissions are 600. When connecting, I receive one of the following messages: "Access is denied." Or "The specified network password is not correct." We are using the registry hack for clear text passwords. This all work fine for the previous version. Would someone kindly tell me what it is that I missed or screwed up? Thanks doverbey@att.com

I did all suggested by man pages, like editing registery of NT client for enabling plain text username/password.Also I tried giving "security server & password server = sunsystem/NT system.Things didnot workout. Well, you should check where your old sambadir is before installing/upgrading a never version. Many distributions does not follow the default install paths to samba. The default installdir (if you do not configure otherwise) is: /usr/local/samba /usr/local/samba/bin /usr/local/samba/lib/ /usr/local/samba/var /usr/local/samba/private You could make symlinks to smbd and nmbd instead of trying to figure out how your current setup is. //Anders> I - firstly I am a newbie to Linux but very familiar with MS networking and > OK with Netware V4 & 5> I have tarball for samba 2.2.3a and have extracted it. However, when I first opened inetd.conf it was an empty file. I also checked the path; /usr/local/samba/bin/smbd -D and the path actually ends at /usr/local...the /samba/bin...was missing. When I execute netstat -a netbios -ssn is running and listening...netbios -ns is running but not listening. /etc/service does show both netbios-ssn, port 139 (tcp and udp) and netbios-ns, port 137 (tcp and udp). I don't quite understand what is happening at this point. Yes, I am new to linux however, I do enjoy it. Thank you for any assitance Steve _

Here is my situation. I have an Ultra1 which running Solaris 2.6. The Ultra1 is a backup server, it has a tape drive directly attach to it. I also have a PC Workstation, running Window 2000. The PC workstation is a development PC, it has code store in \tmp directory. We want to use the Ultra1 to backup the \tmp directory of the PC Workstation. Can Samba help me to accomplish this task? I mean can I install Samba on Ultra1 and mount the \tmp direcotry of the PC Workstation from Ultra1? Please advise. Hello, Help! - I had a established samba client running forever until I was told that I had to move the server from one domain to another. I had the NT admin add the server to the new domain via server manager for domains. I then edited the smb.conf file to the new "workgroup" and changed to the new "password server" (security is set to DOMAIN). I stopped the daemons then run the command "smbpasswd -j CINCOM -r KIRK. I received the following message: error connecting to 10.1.1.51:139 (Connection refused) modify_trust_password: unable to connect to SMB server on machine KIRK. How should the NT admin add the machine (samba server) and how is the password generated? I read something about when a NT domain admin uses the Server Manager for Domains to add a client machine into a domain, he or she really creates a client machine account in the PDC SAM database. The name of the this account is the NETBIOS name of the client machine being added, in uppercase with a dollar sign ($) appended. These machine accounts are not normally seen the standard NT account management tool, User Manager for Domains, but they are vital to the workings of the NT domain security system. Hi everyone, I'm using samba 2.07 under Redhat linux 7.1, and the linux server has an internal IP addr. number. I use Windows 98, XP as clients to connect to samba and map drive; Everything work fine, however, everytime the internet is down then I can't logon to samba at all. If the internet is down and I restart the Windows machines to log on to the workgroup (samba) then it gives me an error message as "No domain server was available to validate your password. You might not be able to access to some network resources". Is there a way that I can setup Samba to work in a LAN environment only (not dependable on the DNS or Internet)? Thank you very much in advance for your help. David N.

As ACL support is still an experimental kernel feature, you will need to patch your kernel, and install Extended Attribute, ACL support and a modified e2fsprogs so that ls, chmod, etc. work properly. These, along with very good installation instructions, can be found at http://www.acl.bestbits.at . We set it up on a Debian machine with minimal headaches, the RPM packages should make it a no-brainer on Redhat. Then you will need to build a new samba rpm --with-acl-support to enable the ability for granular permissions. Good luck! It appears that at this point in time, what you want to do is not supported by Samba itself. For that matter, Windows NT/2000 Server does not have a provision for this. You can setup a list of workstations that a user is allowed to login from on a Windows NT/2000 Server - but you cannot restrict concurrent logons from those workstations. Netware is the only PC-based NOS that I know of that has a provision for doing that. It appears that at this point in time, what you want to do is not supported by Samba itself. For that matter, Windows NT/2000 Server does not have a provision for this. I have a samba connection to a box on my LAN (mount -t smbfs -o username=someuser, password=somepass //computername/share /mountpoint/ (I'm using Red Hat Linux 7.2)). My problem is that I'm trying to transfer files that go OVER 2GB in size. I can't get my FTP server up and running (which isn't that important since I'm formatting and doing an upgrade) so that's not an option. I am running Redhat 8.0. I have it networked with winxp. I was using samba successfully until today. I installed a new harddrive, cpu, and motherboard into the linux box. I transferred files as normal for a while but now im getting errors when I transfer. I get a 'path to deep' error now when I try to transfer files in the following methods: I can transfer just fine using linux from hard drive to hard drive....but when I use windows explorer I get errors going from linux drive to linux drive....and windows drive to linux drive....BUT not from linux drive to windows drive. We noted at the time of the passage of the version SAMBA from 2.2.2 to 2.2.5 that the parameter "hide unreadable=yes" strongly degrades the performances. Does there exist a solution? Thank you. Good reception. Greetings. Jean-Luc OLLIVIER S.E.P.R. jl.ollivier@sepr-route.fr -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed

I am running samba 2.2.7 on three solaris 2.8 servers. Only one of the Sun server I can not connect to and I have remove and install ver 2.2.2 and 2.2.7. The server in question I can access with a unix server but not a Windows client. The testparm shows no problem and I put the same smb.conf on all the servers. The only thing different is in the /usr/local/samba/private dir. there is no MACHINE.SID file. What action can be taken to create this file?? Thanks. Hello, i have a prog in a samba server who need a directory hidden attribute to work, but the map hidden =3D yes is only for files, what can i do ?!?!?!??!?!? Thanks PATT
>Hello, i have a prog in a samba server who need a >directory hidden attribute to work, but the map >hidden = yes is only for files, what can i do >?!?!?!??!?!?Looks like Posix doesn't allow making a directory read only for its owner. If you are not afraid of eternal deprecation you may change one bit in the following line of "source/smbd/dosmode.c": result |= (S_IFDIR | S_IWUSR ); and recompile. The bit you want to remove is "S_IWUSR". The above line is preceded by an ominous comment "We never make directories read only for the owner..." so think twice if you really want to do it just so some crappy windoze program can run. I know nothing about and need some guidance with how Samba authenticates with Windows 2000. Briefly a share was created in the Unix world and all windows 2000 users were able to read a specific folder that was shared. Our Unix Admin configured the Samba guest account as ftp and everyone in the windows world who did not have an Unix account were able to read the folder. The win2k domain policy had to be rolled back to it's out of the box default policy and now the ftp account does not have access to the share. Could you point me in the direction of a resource that could help me with this?? Edison R. hello, in first sorry for my english. I've got some problems to apply some permissions on a directory and the behaviour depend on the windows client version. I create a directory like that : directory "toto" owner : rwx group : rwx other wx i want that users (other) cant read but can write in the following share i make a share in smb.conf like that [toto] path = /home/toto browsable = no read only = no i make this test with samba 2.2.2 and both windows 98, windows 2000 clients the behaviour is correct with windows 98(the users "other" cant read the share but can put some files in it) it doesnt work with a windows 2000 client thank you for your answer
