Hello My name is Arjan and I'm a network administrator on a Microsoft Domain. I don't have a lott of experience with Linux and Samba so I want to ask a question about it. I installed SuSe 7.3 on a PC and I like to use Samba like a file/print server. I don't want it to act like a PDC but just a member server using the WINS of the Windows PDC. My question is do I also have to install DNS server on the Windows PDC beside the allready installed WINS? Best regards Arjan van Wijngaarden Message sent by Arjan van Wijngaarden. Hi I work for an NGO in South Africa and am trying to configure a Samba server, but I am way out of my depth! Is there anyone who is willing to be very patient and help me with this? First question: I have created a user with a password on my Linux server under User Manager, and then I have created a share under Samba for that user's home directory, but if I try and access it from my windows machine on the network it keeps rejecting the password, so therefore I am assuming there is something else that I need to do ... What is it? I have gone into the password section on Samba, but It's not making much sense to me. Does the user have to be created there also, and if so how? because it doesn't give any indication as to whether the user has been created or not and there doesn't seem to be any way of seeing anything. Regards Wendi

I was wondering is there a way to block client connections to a Samba server. Id like to do this so I can backup my samba files on a cdrom where the r/w is on the a client machine. I want it to use the full bandwidth while doing this so I don't end up with coasters. I know I could use the firewall to block it. Just a thought, is I change the Hosts Allowed in smb.conf to the IP of the backup machine hmm. Anyway any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks Kev
Hi, You better have your crontab stop smbd and nmbd services and restart them back at certain times in the daily routine. I currently run Suse 9 Personal. I'm trying to set up Samba to share files with windows XP. So far, I'm able so see my windows box from Suse but not Suse from XP. I have been trying to set up the samba server but can't find it In the KDE Gui. Does anyone knows how to set up the samba server in Suse9? All i could find was the client. Do i have to install it? When samba is installed, isn't the server installed with it? I have used RedHat 9 and was quickly able to set it up. Suse9 is all new to me. Can anyone please help? Thanks a million. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New Yahoo! Photos - easier uploading and sharing. http://photos.yahoo.com/
