Hi there, I have a query about subnet browsing using Samba 2.2.1a that I hope someone could help me with. We have two subnets on our network. One that I'll call (aa.bb.cc.*) that we're moving from and another (xx.yy.zz.*) that we're doing some testing on and will shortly be moving to. On the aa.bb.cc.* subnet we have an NT WINS server, which is also the domain controler for our domain. On the new subnet xx.yy.zz.* I have a Samba server configured as the local master browser, which I've set the OS level to 65 and set the workgroup to our domain. The problem is that from clients within subnet xx.yy.zz.* I can only see/browse the machines within that subnet. I can't browse any machines from the old subnet. When I start nmbd on the Samba server it wins the local election but then seems to have a problem contacting the WINS server, this I believe is the reason why the browsing isn't working? Heres an extract from the nmbd.log file: [2001/10/10 16:13:40, 3] nmbd/nmbd_namelistdb.c:add_name_to_subnet(249) add_name_to_subnet: Added netbios name __MSBROWSE__<01> with first IP xx.yy.zz .21 ttl=0 nb_flags=c0 to subnet UNICAST_SUBNET [2001/10/10 16:13:42, 2] nmbd/nmbd_nameregister.c:register_name_timeout_response (201) register_name_timeout_response: WINS server at address aa.bb.cc.18 is not r esponding. I can ping the WINS server from my samba server fine. I can also find windows machines across both subnets with by running \\SERVERNAME. Hi, If your samba server can't contact its wins server at subnet aa.bb.cc.*, it won't be able to know the existence of the domain master browser for its domain. You have to find out why your samba server can't contact its wins server (a firewall problem?). Another solution would be to edit your lmhosts file and add a netbios name of type <domain_name>#1b with the ip address of the domain master browser (NT domain controler). Hi there, thanks for the response. I have added the IP address of the domain master browser to the lmhosts file - now this seems to have helped somewhat. The nmbd log now contains a list of machines from the domain master browser on the aa.bb.cc.* subnet and clients on the new subnet can now browse everything! However I still get the message that the WINS server cannot be contacted. The WINS server is the domain master browser, so how come I can get a browse list but no WINS connection? Another problem I have is that clients in the new subnet cannot find the domain controller when they logon - however this is another issue! I've set-up a packet sniffer on a mirrored port that the WINS server is attached to (local subnet). Packets are coming through from the remote subnet and the computer names are being registered in the WINS database - however there are no packets being sent back from the WINS server and I notice the same packets are sent through 5 times from the samba server - which then seems to correspond with the 5 WINS timeout messages in the log: register_name_timeout_response: WINS server at address aa.bb.cc.18 is not responding I've tested this with clients on the local subnet and the WINS server also doesn't send packets back to them? Could this be a problem with the WINS server itself? Have you checked that UDP 137 packets can go from one net to another? It your clients at local subnet, where the WINS server is, can register their names, then there is probably a network problem.> Another problem I have is that > clients in the > new subnet cannot find the domain controller when they logon > - however this > is another issue! > > Thanks Again > > RichardIt could be the same problem: if your clients at remote subnet can't access its WINS server, they won't be able to find its DC. Look in /etc/rc.d/rc5.d for S*samba. Change it to a number higher than the number for S*cups or whatever the one for the printer is. The numbers signify in what order the services start. Hope that helps ... just my $0.02 :) -- Ian Cooper ian@wpi.edu On Tue, 16 Oct 2001, Erick Perez - Network Administrator wrote:> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 10:13:49 -0500 (EST) > From: Erick Perez - Network Administrator > <eperez@mitchellanderson-blythe.com> > To: samba@lists.samba.org > Subject: Samba and CUPS > > Sirs, I have a Linunx Mandrake 8.0 box with Samba and CUPS installed.
