has anyone tried to make a win98 (beta3) connect to a samba server? Is there some little secret I don't know about? -Steve Schwartz steve@photographics.net
I'm having trouble getting file sharing to work between Linux and Win98. I have the latest Samba, 2.0.5a, installed on my Linux box, which is currently running Red Hat 6.1. I have two shares setup in Samba. On my Win98 box, I have file/print sharing setup with two shares. In the diagnostics, I can get to test #5, which is the nmblookup -B ACLIENT '*'. It fails with name_query failed to find name *. I can list shares for either box from the same box. For example, Win98, Network Neighborhood lists itself and its shares, but it doesn't see the Linux box. Samba lists it's own shares, but can't connect to the Win98 box. I have a firewall running on the Win98 box and thought this could be the problem on more than one occasion. The live log view doesn't show any connections from the Linux box, not even any attempts. I've tried disabling the entire firewall, but that didn't help. I don't have a local LAN yet. This is trying to go over the Internet, from one box to the other, which happen to be in the same room, sharing the same Internet connection through a hub, which is @Home Cable Internet. Can anyone offer any help to solve this problem..? My two systems are: Win98 Box: Windows 98 PII 233 64MB RAM 10Base-T NIC Firewall blocking most ports under 1024, including fileshares from unknown systems (the Linux box IP is setup as allowed to connect) Linux Box: Red Hat 6.1 486 133 24MB RAM 10Base-T NIC --------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. One is 24.112.124.xxx, the other is 24.113.62.xxx. I've noticed the Linux box was sending requests to 24.113.63.255 and the firewall on the Win98 box has been trapping netbios to/from 24.112.125.255. I tried adding new rules to allow that IP, but it doesn't seem to work. Maybe it's the firewall program itself, but even with the firewall completely disabled, still nothing happens. Maybe @Home does filter them.. If they do filter, is there any way I could get around this? It would be a lot easier to use file shares rather than FTPing back and forth. Or am I out of luck and will have to wait till I replace Win98 with Linux then make use of NFS? --------------------------------------------------------------------------- B. Hi everyone, I have a simple question. If I am logged as a user in window98, can I access a samba drive as another user, by sepcifying the user at the connection time in the map drive window? If yes, what is the format? Somethin like this : //computer/share%user%password ??? i had samba working a couple of years ago with my win98 clients on a small network.. but now i'm running into some trouble (since i've redone my server).. to start, i can logon from a win98 client and have it grab the profiles the particular user's profile directory.. it even stores the profiles when you log out.. now one would think that everything seems to be working a-ok.. but here's where my problem starts.. when i test the samba shares from my freebsd box using smbclient, i can logon to the shares.. when i use the net use z: /home command from my win98 client i can access that share and map the drive letter.. however, once i go into the network neighborhood, there is one object in the window - Entire Network - and when i double click that to browse the network, i get an error message saying that it cannot browse the local network.. i've been reading the online samba docs and haven't found much of anything.. but i know that i DID not create the machine account in smbpasswd for the win98 client.. i'm not sure if that's why i cant browse the network (i'm not at the machine right now to test) or not, but i'll find out later.. here's another odd thing that's happening.. everytime i double click Entire Network on the win98 box, i check my log files for samba.. and in either the nmbd log or smbd log (i cant remember right now) i get the error messages that use ftp cannot login.. i'm not using any guest accounts.. which is why i found that to be odd.. i just think it's kind of strange that i can retrieve and store my profiles but i cannot browse the network.. if anyone has any suggestions please let me know.. i will try them out as soon as i can get access to my samba server (later tonight) thanks.. tim
I am trying to get samba to work with win98se. I have my smb.conf configured correctly (or so I've been told by two people who have it working for them) I am having the apparently common problem of linux not accepting my password due to win98 using encrypted passwords and Linux not using them. I have encypted passwords = yes in my smb.conf. I have altered my registry to use plain text passwords and it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?? I am running Redhat 7.3 My Samba version is: 2.2.3a-6 Please help. Thanks, Parrish
