Hello everyone. I apologize in advance for a simple question yet hard to a beginner. I'm new to SAMBA - 1 1/2 days old. I'm in the process of configuring/testing SAMBA in our RISC test box. I am now stuck on TEST 5 below. TEST 5:-------run the command "nmblookup -B ACLIENT '*'"You should get the PCs IP address back. If you don't then the clientsoftware on the PC isn't installed correctly, or isn't started, or yougot the name of the PC wrong. If ACLIENT doesn't resolve via DNS then use the IP address of theclient in the above test. Exactly what client software do I need to install/configure my NT? I've read all the documentations I could find and yet there is no metion about the client software mentioned in TEST 5. Any suggestion or recommendation is appreciated. Angel

Right-click on Network Neighborhood, hit "Properties", go to the "Services" tab. Make sure you have "Client for Microsoft Networks". Then go to "Protocols" tab and make sure you have "TCP/IP" installed and configured correctly. ("Ask Your Network Administrator." [tm]) For good measure, you might hit the "Bindings" tab and make sure that the protocol and service have an active binding. Most of this gets set up pretty much by default on a typical NT install, so your problem is probably elsewhere. See if the two machines can communicate in other ways (`ping', `telnet') and if they're in the same broadcast domain (`arp'). If not, you have TCP/IP problems, not Samba problems. Peter
This test is designed to be run from the Unix server to see shares on a remote NT server/workstation or Win 9x machine with File and Print sharing active. In both cases a shared folder/device must be set up on the NT machine. "nmblookup" is equivalent to using the "net view" command on a win9x or winnt machine. When they say "client software" they are referring to the samba installation on the workstation/server that you installed in on. This test checks to see if your wins server on the Unix box is working correctly. If you are not implementing a wins server or trying to get wins resolution on your Unix box, than skip this test. In order for this test to work, the ACLIENT must be on the same subnet as you. -----Original Message----- From: ANGEL BUGARIN [mailto:ANGEL.BUGARIN@mail.sprint.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 17, 2000 11:52 PM To: Multiple recipients of list SAMBA Subject: What client software do I need? Hello again everyone. I would like to say thank you to those who replied. After two days of testing and retesting Samba, I was finally able to "map" an AIX file system in my NT. Awesome thing to see. The only change I made in my NT client was the host table - this is to include the IP address of the RISC box where Samba resides. Then of course make changes to the smb.conf to test connectivity. Prior to a request made by one of our user, I had no knowledge about what Samba is. After fumbling throught the "html" documentations, I began to see what it can do. In fact when I had it working, I began to like it too. I did not expect a "specific system documentation". However a more structured documentation would have help - ie; this is the server, this is the client, this is what you expect - something like that. I had to fumble my way around the "html" documentations just to figure things out. I believe that if anyone asks a question, regardles of how simple or stupid it may sound, that no assumption should be made about the person asking that question. Isn't that what a LIST is all about to provide help or suggestion without discrimination? I apologize if I offended anyone. Angel -----Original Message----- From: Bugarin, Angelito R.
