Hello everyone, as stated in the topic ? I would like to know which of above works better with wine... I will be buying laptop soon, and will probably have to chose one of above. Yes I know both Intel and ATI drivers for Linux sucks ? but I would like to know which of them sucks more ;], Nvidia will probably not be an option because of my current cash limitation (beside, I already got pretty decent stationary PC with GF 9800GT on board ? so I would like to compare ATI/Intel vs Nvidia). Thanks in advance. P.S Sorry for my English
Get an AMD GPU, even if both had perfect drivers AMD hardware would be a LOT faster than Intel. I would get a lowend or midend gpu e.g. something hd34x0/hd43x0 or hd36x0/hd46x0.
If you want to know which of the two (Intel vs. ATI) sucks more, I'd like to remind you of a joke: Two bald men were arguing over their baldness: "I think you're way more bald than I am." "How can you say such nonsense, when neither of us has a single hair on our heads!" "That may be true, but you have a much larger head." That said, ATI sucks more - it has way more stuff in their chips, but that just means - more stuff that doesn't work. Unlike AMD, Intel at least takes their Linux (and other *nix) support seriously.
Gert van den Berg wrote:> And ATI / AMD seem to have some developers lurking around wine-devel suggesting fixes, etc...They do, unfortunately it's not enough to get everything fixed in the next driver version. Unless AMD will throw substantial number of developers at Linux drivers to implement all the missing features Wine needs/use and fix major bugs nothing will change. And I'm not seeing this effort... Until then, regardless how good AMD's hardware might be without good and working drivers it won't be a viable option. As to Intel - it's a crappy HW with horrid drivers. Stay away from it, unless compiz (3-d desktop effects) is all you need.
