wine users - Jul 2008 - Half Life 2 - Can't get past the loading screen

I'm running the game with the following options:

> -novid -dxlevel 90 -width 1024 -height 768

I've got sound working using the ALSA driver.

I can play other games just fine.
I have an ATI Radeon X2300 which never game me any problems, I even used
glxgears and got these results, which I think are ok:

> 7851 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1570.134 FPS
> 11556 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2311.148 FPS
> 13983 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2796.530 FPS
> 13909 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2781.636 FPS
> 12802 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2560.379 FPS
> 13365 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2672.850 FPS
> 12318 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2463.449 FPS
> 14019 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2803.650 FPS


But the thing is that wether I choose a lower resolution, a lower DX, with or
without the intro vid, windowed or fullscreen, I always get to the initial
loading that has that blurry background and it will *always* exit back to the
desktop maintaning the game's resolution.

Is there any known fix for this? Any help would be appreciated  :?

Did you try all the suggested workarounds in AoppDB's HOWTO?
