Needed files from WIN dist. [BEFORE: Windows Installation under WINE]
I think everyone misunderstood me. I'm not trying to set up windows to start using windows in Linux like with VMWare. Why would anyone want to do that. My problem is the fact that I need some files from MS-Windows to be able to run some programs in WINE. Like I need regedit.exe and other programs in the windows distibution. I see that most people copy the c:\windows\ directory from a previously installed windows in another partition or something like that or make the WINE config point to installed windows somewhere. I have however no access to previously installed windows on this computer. I only have the Windows install CDs. Do I really have to set up a partition on the computer and install Win there to get these files??? They contain what you want. The windows CD should have extract.exe, which should run with WineDos. There are also other cab viewers and extractors out there. E.g. CabWoman comes to mind. Find out what cab contains the file you want and extract them. B.t.w, why do you want to run regedit if you don't have a windows installation? Wine stores data in a readable form. The problem you have left, though, is that the installer for an "OS" is not an application program of that "OS", but in fact an instance of the "OS". It might use application programs as tools, as a linux install might use FI rpm, cpio, tar and gzip, but the installer itself is not an application program. If there are .cab files on the distribution, maybe extract.exe can get at them. you can run that with wine, or with dosemu. expand.exe might work on files named blah.ex_, if you run into some of those.
