My desire to run Asterisk is finally giving me the reason to install a Linux box at home. Is RH9 the only distro that Asterisk will run on, and can anyone recommend a good source for a cheap Linux (RH9) box? For example, walmart.com has microtel boxes with no OS. Will RH9 and Asterisk run on these boxes? Thanks! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Linux will run on a variety of boxes with many different processors... Linux will even run on PocketPC and PALM! If you have an old machine lying around it will work perfectly for running Linux... However... I hate to tell you this, but Asterisk is not well suited to someone who doesn't know Linux... By your question I can tell that you DO NOT know Linux... I'm not trying to be nasty or anything, seriously, you just need to learn Linux or know someone who knows Linux. There are several good books on Linux, Sams and O'Reilly publishers have several of them... Learning Linux will not only help you with Asterisk, but Linux in itself can do many many cool things that you may not have even thought of... I really don't mean to discourage you from using Asterisk, quite the contrary, but you really will have a hard time making it work properly if you don't know Linux... -Chris ----- Original Message ----- From: John Williams To: asterisk-users@lists.digium.com Sent: Tuesday, August 17, 2004 11:37 AM Subject: [Asterisk-Users] couple basic questions My desire to run Asterisk is finally giving me the reason to install a Linux box at home. Ebay is your friend. Dell / HP / IBM / Compaq workstations and servers are available for essentially 1 handful of dirt. I have run RedHat on all of the above. Will RH9 and > Asterisk run on these boxes?oh, no no.. Asterisk should run on nearly any distro (provided basic things like C libraries and stuff). I've found that the property surplus store at the local university is a good source for cheap, though dated, PCs. I've seen PII 300+ MHz boxes in the US$60 range. This is MUCH more power than you'll need for a home asterisk install (I have two; both run on P-200 class machines with slackware 9.0). And as Chris mentioned.. it'd be wise to get comfortable with Linux generally before diving too quickly into Asterisk. It would be easy to get overwhelmed and lose enthusiasm if you bite off too much all at once. Greg

OK, I have RH9 up and running ... respecting the advice that I should know my way around Linux before plunging into Asterisk, can anyone comment on the things I should be able to do with Linux before I attempt to bring up Asterisk? Thanks Much! P.S. By way of background, years ago I did a little shell and network programming with Solaris and emacs, but have largely forgot the details and have never been a sys admin. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The only thing that fouls up Linux on generic cheap PCs is some of the weird video chipsets, but who cares that X won't work? You don't want X on a server anyway. -- PGP key ID E85DC776 - finger abuse@mooli.org.uk for full key
