Does Asterisk work with Lucent or any other PBX phone systems????
Absolutely, it can be a little tricky but its definitely doable. Check out the info I wrote on the wiki, as well as peoples posts here for more information on hows its done. You can use Asterisk as a VoIP gateway to your existing legacy PBX. You can't plug Lucent's (Avaya's) DCP, MLX, or ATL phone sets into an Asterisk box -- the protocols are all proprietary. But you can certainly connect between the systems using analog or T1/Ei connections. This may be a little to far into PBX land but... Anyone know of a place where there are good examples of how to configure the Definity PBX stations with PRI? I currently have a T1 between a Definity and Asterisk. It is currently doing robbed-bit signalling but I would like to do PRI. I can get the PRI up and working signalling wise but to actually route calls from the PBX to Asterisk is another story. More specifically I am trying to figure out how to do this: PSTN->PBX->Asterisk->IP Phone I need to get an extension on the PBX to leave out the T1 to the Asterisk box. Hi, I've only just picked up on this thread, and being responsible for engineering activities at Citel Technologies, I have a direct interest in some of the points being discussed. For the purpose of this forum, I'll keep this response brief, but for anybody involved in actual business opportunities that Citel products may help with, please don't hesitate to contact me directly using the details below. Yes, Citel Technologies does have a range of gateway products that enable a SIP application server (IP-PBX or SoftSwitch) to communicate with legacy digital phones. The legacy phones remain fully functional and appear to the app server as IP phones, but the legacy phones still 'believe' they are connected to the original PBX. The end users can retain their investment in the telephones, and the copper from the MDF to the desks, but they migrate their telephony system to IP. As far as possible we maintain the same user experience on the legacy phone, but enable the phone to support the additional features provided by the new host application server. The SIP stack on our gateway has been developed in-house and incorporates many standard business phone features that legacy phone users expect. We offer support for legacy phones from leading manufacturers such as Nortel, Lucent/Avaya, NEC and Rolm, and we are adding more to the list on an ongoing basis. We have a number of customers already using Asterisk (SIP) to support various legacy phone types and we believe this particular market has tremendous potential. If they work as advertised, you can keep your Avaya/Lucent phones, throw out your legacy PBX, and connect them all to Asterisk! However, I doubt they have all the display integration working correctly. Anyone know for sure? If you just wanted to get IP connectivity to your ICS, then using Citel products may not be the way to go. If you have outgrown your ICS and want to add more phones, or if you want to add a voice mail system for example, then moving to an IP system can be more cost effective. It all comes down to where you want to take your system and how much it costs. If you are already using Asterisk for VoIP then you've already made the decision and sorted the phones out - you wouldn't buy a handset gateway. But if you were a legacy phone user now, and you were considering VoIP, then you wouldn't have to be tied to the same legacy PBX vendor. Using a handset gateway gives you the choice of going with various IP-PBX solutions. The question originally asked was whether legacy phones could be supported from Asterisk - the answer is yes. If the solution suits a particular requirement then fine, if it doesn't then you have to look elsewhere, but there are plenty of legacy PBX users out there who are intending to take advantage of IP telephony, but who want to keep the huge investment they've made in their handsets. The product literature on your site states that I can remove my modular ICS, buy a 3com NBX system and your card and plug all my phones into your card. The NBX takes care of the VOIP. I might be missing something, but I think I can get the same functionality and probably more by keeping my existing Modular ICS and simply plugging it into a T100P or TE405P. Am I missing something?
