openssh unix dev - Nov 2004 - sshd refusing logins from certain hosts

Ok this is a weird one.

I cannot ssh into my server from the ISP directly.

I CAN ssh into my server from the VPN to my company from the ISP.

I can ssh into my server on a different port from the ISP directly and the VPN.

I am using PAM authentication.

I am using PuTTY

When it fails, it first asks me for my username, then says "connection
closed".

any ideas?

Tell us what platform and version of OpenSSH you're using?  Look at the 
log file?  Run sshd in debug mode and see what is says?

Please, check /etc/hosts.allow on server side.
