OT: reasoning behind open vs. closed SSH
Let me preface this message by saying that the "General Discusion" mailing list archived was
filled with 99% spam, so I though I'd post here instead to get some real people.
My employer is using SSH to replace rcp, rsh and rlogin in its UNIX products.
Our experience so far is that the commercial product is slow(1), and difficult to use in scripts

SSH scanning attempt vias "guest" and "admin" accounts
There has been some discussion on the gentoo security list of late about a new attempt to find ssh
vulnerabilities. No one has reported a successfull break in as far as I know, but I though the
cross post couldn't hurt.
Dan Margolis (krispykringle at gentoo.org) has put together some notes about it.

sshd refusing connection problem

Do you notice wether or not it takes a certain number of connections

Local disconnect during restart & NIS...
Hi,
I''ve noticed that if I have NIS enabled then shorewall will fail to start correctly as there is a brief time during
startup (and restart) that the network is wholly disconnected causing NIS to object during RPC. The problem appears to
be that during initialization and building of the chains the default is to allow existing connections and internal
traffic to/from loopback,

Samba 3 and LDAP
Hey all,
I hope you all had a pleasent holiday season (okay so I'm a week or so
late... I've been in hibernation <g>).
Now, does anyone out there know where I can get documentation on running
Samba 3 as a PDC using LDAP as a backend - I know I'll get plenty of URLs,
so to narrow things down a little, I'm competant with Samba 2.2.x and have
no clue about LDAP, yet we're

Policy Editor and Groups?
Hey,
Quick question. We run Samba 2.2.8, is there a version of Samba (2.2.x/3.x)
that allows me to do the following :
Go into Poledit, add a group that corresponds to a UNIX group (e.g. Staff)
and set policies on it, having those policies apply to ANYONE in UNIX group
'staff' ?
The samba server we have is the only PDC and have several NT4 servers as
members only.
Any thoughts?

TSIG failure
I'm attempting to join samba 4 (using latest 4.4 built from source) as
DC to an existing Win 2k8 server domain. The join works fine with no
errors and appears to be replicating fine. However the DNS is not
updated and I get the following error multiple times when running
samba_dnsupdate --all-names:
TSIG error with server: tsig verify failure
I've checked the time and all servers are

sshd refusing connections problem
We have been having a problem with sshd on our shell server.
This has been happening since March 4, 2003 or before IIRC. Initially I
thought the next OS upgrade, to 4.8 would fix this. I am accustomed to
haveing little things go away in a month or two.
I think we jumped to 4.7-STABLE on Feb 28, 2003. Some exploit fix
wasn't being MFSd to RELENG_4_7 fast enough for my nerves (cvsd?). It

DNAT or SNAT or both?
I have an internal (10.16.0.0/24) network which is routed out
via a proxy on port 80 only, this proxy is then routed to an
upstream proxy on port 8080, this then runs through a cluster
of caching (squid) proxies and then finally, goes out to the internet.
As there are a cluster of squid proxies, the IP of an internet-request
from the internal LAN is never the same, it changes to match the proxy

Any package which takes the likelihood function and do Lasso fitting?
Dear all,
I am looking for a package that takes the likelihood function and use the L1 penalty for MLE. More specifically I would like to fit the Hawke process model using the function likelihoodHawkes() in package "hawkes" https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/hawkes/hawkes.pdf. Had a look at lasso packages at CRAN and couldn't find a general purpose one. Although I can use an

Windows 2K/XP Profile/Homedir replication issue?
Hey there,
Just a question for you Samba 2.2.x gurus out there :)
We have a contingent (a steadily increasing contingent) of Win2K and WinXP
workstations.
Does anyone here know how to stop the profiles from replicating?
If we create a file in the profile dir, say \\PDC\UserHome\profile.doc.
It will replicate that to the profile directory, while one file or two files
are not a problem, we use

Upgrade to 2.6.1 appears to break puppetmaster
Hello.
While trying to get to the bottom of a puppetmaster+unicorn+nginx rig that''s
serving empty files, it seemed to be a relatively sensible idea to upgrade
the puppetmaster to 2.6.1
This broke in a manner that seems to be the multiple-& bug.
Running the puppetmaster standalone gives the following:

Restricting logins to certain clients
I run samba-3 as PDC for a small domain with 4 clients. User
A should be allowed to login on all client machines, while
logins for the privileged user B should be restricted to 2
machines for security reasons. Any ideas how to manage
that? Suggestions for further reading would be highly
appreciated?

sshd crashing on IRIX (3.6.1p1)
Occasionally, we're noticing that sshd is core dumping on our IRIX
6.5.18f machine.
The only time we've really noticed it is when users are logging in with
putty from offsite (although I'm not really sure it's a client issue).
The user manages to log in, sshd apparently core dumps, but the user is
not logged out, the privilege separated user is still running their own

SSHD does not cleanup kerberos ticket while root logins
Hi all,
It looks like a bug for me, but I'd like to ask if someone has the same
problem. We are using OpenSSH 4.3p2 from Debian 4.0 (stable), but the
same problem is with original OpenSSH 4.3p2. When root logins with his
kerberos ticket and then logout, his ticket remains on the machine. I
found in source (sshd.c) in privsep_postauth function, that if root
logins then use_privsep is set to 0

SSH Client Hangs after logging in to SSHD
I'm not a ssh expert and I don't know if the log is good or bad, but I too am
running OpenSHH under OpenServer. I find that after I connect, the return key
has no effect unless I first type:
stty sane <Ctrl>j
If you've hit <ENTER> before that you must first press <Ctrl>j a couple of times
to clean out the buffer. After I type the above command, everything
