Syslinux - Apr 2004 - problems while booting up syslinux with thinstation

while I try to boot up thinstation from a hard drive I get an error saying
'unable to locate "root=" please specify a valid root device'
Ive checked the syslinux.cfg file and I think its ok, I've contacted
thinstation and they refuse to help can you
