zfs discuss - May 2009 - Is it safe to add a 5-disk Raidz to a pool that contains a 8-disk raidZ?

Doing so you may experience some performace loss, as 5-way raidz is bit slower
than 8-way raidz (at least I think so). Both vdevs provide same data redundancy
so you shouldn''t be worried about data loss.
