Just a quick question that occurred to me in the shower this morning, Once booting from ZFS is supported, are there plans to support live upgrade using clones? This would be analogous to the current process of splitting an SVM mirror for live upgrade, but with all the advantages of ZFS. Boyd

Besides the obvious changes to the install and upgrade tools, we need ZFS support for ''clone swap'' (6276916), which would allow you to take a clone and make it the active filesystem, switching places with the other. We think the idea is pretty cool too ;-) - Eric -- Eric Schrock, Solaris Kernel Development http://blogs.sun.com/eschrock
booting from ZFS is supported? What''s the procedure ??? I''d like to get rid of of Solaris Volume Manager and use zfs for the OS file systems instead. Anyone knows where the documentation is? Toni This message posted from opensolaris.org
Toni, Booting from a ZFS filesystem is not currently supported. The ZFS Boot project has been tasked with providing this support in the near future. Please check blogs.sun.com/tabriz for ZFS Boot information. Tabriz Toni Ribas wrote:>booting from ZFS is supported? Booting from ZFS is not yet supported. Keep an eye on Tabriz Leman''s weblog to monitor the status of this project. http://blogs.sun.com/roller/page/tabriz Lori Alt Toni Ribas wrote:> booting from ZFS is supported? Booting from ZFS isn''t currently supported but is coming in the future. You can look for updates and info on booting from ZFS at Tabriz''s blog: http://blogs.sun.com/tabriz Noel :-) ************************************************************************ ** "Question all the answers" On Dec 20, 2005, at 11:40 AM, Toni Ribas wrote:> booting from ZFS is supported? Can you reveal whether current plans are to include ZFS boot support along with ZFS itself in S10 update 2, and at the same time make ZFS the default for new installations instead of UFS? Or is this at least currently a consideration, depending on how smoothly the testing goes in SX, or has this timetable already been ruled out as being too soon? The goal for S10 U2 is to make ZFS boot possible for intrepid souls, though not available as a standard install option. As you might imagine, the install code has a lot of hard-wired assumptions about filesystems that are no longer true for ZFS. In a future update, ZFS root will be available as an install option; at some point after that, it will become the default option; and by S11, I would hope that it''s the only option. Jeff
