[zfs-discuss] A better name than "virtual device" for the constituents of a pool
I recall people expressing annoyance about the fact that physical hard drives are called "virtual devices" in ZFS terminology. Instead of calling the physical drives and the files which constitute a pool "virtual devices", wouldn''t it make more sense to call them "puddles"? Sun presumably wouldn''t be too apprehensive about such a name, as it already refers to a collection of consolidations as a "Wad Of S---, er, Stuff", not to mention the "I can grab a slab" source of the term "slab allocator".
