What is the best or most appropiate benchmark to test the performance of ZFS? ---Bob This message posted from opensolaris.org
>What is the best or most appropiate benchmark to test the performance of ZFS?Do you want the ex-benchmark-engineer''s answer, or the actual correct one from an end user / system architect answer? ex-bnechmarke-engineer''s answer is "as soon as we figure out where it performs the best and most robustly compared to the competition". 8-) End user / system architect actual correct answer is "benchmark the workload that you do locally". Most people''s real world usage looks less like a synthetic benchmark result and more like... what they actually do. Sometimes, there are synthetic benchmark components which closely resemble what you really do with your systems. Rarely, synthetic benchmark performance on an overall basis closely matches your scaling parameters for your actual workloads. Most of the time, most of the benchmarks out there don''t look like what you use the system for. Why don''t you describe what you do with storage on your systems? -george william herbert gherbert at retro.com / gherbert at taos.com

Do you like to repeat successful tests or do you like to find undiscovered bottle necks? ZFS gives very promisig performance at key points but it needs some work on caching issues that did not appear in Suns internal tests. For microbenchmarking, you might check out filebench http://sourceforge.net/projects/filebench -- richard Bob Palowoda wrote:> What is the best or most appropiate benchmark to test the performance of ZFS? > > ---Bob > This message posted from opensolaris.org > _______________________________________________ > zfs-discuss mailing list > zfs-discuss at opensolaris.org > http://opensolaris.org/mailman/listinfo/zfs-discuss
