fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
Hi - I posted the question to the xenserver install forum a couple days ago but haven''t had any luck (no reply) - then tried xen-api about a day ago, but I haven''t seen any traffic on that list - I checked the archives to confirm my message is there - just low low low traffic. I know this isn''t really the right place (I''m sorry), but I''m betting (hoping) someone can help and getting more desparate for an answer. http://forums.citrix.com/thread.jspa?threadID=337104 I''ve tried XCP 1.6 and the current Xenserver download. I have installed both xen and xcp several times previously, but this is the first time I''ve seen this issue. The install completes as expected, and I''m asked to remove the media from the dvd drive. On reboot I get a page of gibberish. After pressing ENTER a few times I noticed what I thought was text... Could not find kernel image: <gibberish and seeming random crud> boot: The hardware (I have used similar before) has an intel srcs16 RAID controller - the controller is detected by the installer - the install seems fine - a rescue linux disk (centos) can see the installed xcp partition and mount them / read the files. Before I realized xenserver / xcp use gpt I thought maybe the issue was a bad MBR - but that didn''t help. I can boot into a centos rescue and see the installed partition. I tried installing xenserver and xcp to a usb stick to see if I was better able to access the raid array after xenserver / xcp were running - that didn''t help. Any idea what I''ve done wrong or need to do to fix is appreciated. Or is the issue with a non-completely supported controller?? Thank you! Re: fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
Errol - thanks! I saw a post people made about rebuilding initrd (mkinitrd --with-usb) and gave that a shot. My backgroud is more freebsd than linux - and that feels rusty. It feels like it may be the issue (a missing driver) but how do I tell? Dump dmsg from a shell boot on the xenserver and compare it how? Thanks again. I tried copying /sys/block/* (I read it in a seemingly related how to) and ran mkinitrd but that did not help. That's true - hadn't thought of it in working days tobe honest owing to how big I'd presumed the community was - with time shifts and so on :-) but good point. Thanks Ian! I belive there Is a bug in xcp centos 6.4 were xen.tar.gz is pointing to wrong folder. I had to correct menu entry to add /boot If I was you I would either boot from rescue disk and check that grub2 config file is pointing to right files and location or edit grub at boot time. Re: fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
Do you know what the correct setting is? Presumably i could correct that from the rescue boot. I was able to reproduce the issue with the latest xenserver install disk as well - so I suspect Errol is on the right track - there might be a driver in the bootable iso which is missing from the installed boot process. I just need to know how to identify that & fix it. The intel scrs16 seems to be an lsi megaraid with intel brand. I can read the installed gpt partition both in xenserver / advanced /shell bot & other rescue options so it seems to work until the installed bootloader process tries to access it. That seems to be where the missing link is? Thanks! M jacek burghardt <jaceksburghardt@gmail.com> wrote: I belive there Is a bug in xcp centos 6.4 were xen.tar.gz is pointing to wrong folder. You stated that the error you are getting is "Could not find kernel image" if you are missing a driver for hard drive controler you would get error message that states could not find root partition. look into /boot see what files are there and then edit /boot/grub/grub.cfg on mine install of centos 6.4 xcp grub.cfg was pointing to / instead of /boot Mine grub.cfg is multiboot /boot/xen-4.4-unstable.gz dom0_mem=1024M,max:1024M loglvl=all guest_loglvl=all elevator=noop iommu=0 cpufreq=dom0-kernel cpuidle module /boot/vmlinuz-linux-xen root=UUID=4f7314c5-fa15-4b3e-9c37-2543f9f26ab6 ro iommu=no-intremap quiet module /boot/initramfs-linux-xen.img On Sun, Sep 22, 2013 at 11:56 AM, mitch@bitblock.net <mitch@bitblock.net>wrote:> Do you know what the correct setting is? Re: fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
Interesting - I don''t have a grub.cfg I''ve reinstalled - I still don''t have one. Xcp1.6 and xenserver produce seem to have the same result. Is there another location where a backup might be stored? Currently I''m trying to rebuild one based on what I see from yours, and what I see in the /boot folder. I''m not sure how to figure out the root UUID but that''s what I''m working on. Thanks Jacek! Hi again... I'm pretty sure the missing grub.conf is relevant if not key - though I'm still sure how to fix it. Thanks Ian! I''ll look into that in the morning. It is hardware raid - (intel/megaraid) and at install time I can only see the raid volumes available. Each piece seems to get me closer. Seems to be the same on xenserver as xcp. Thanks! Nope real raid. Scrs16 intel which uses a megaraid driver iirc. An mentioned that - which would explain why my attemptsto repair grub have been fruitless Will be looking at the extlinux config as soon as I get to a desk Side question. Xen proper uses xl ? Which is newer than xcp and xenserver? Xcp won''t be released anymore since xenserver open sourced. So will xenserver upgrade to the new xen? Re: fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
Hi Errol - so I went through the rescue disk boot, mounted /dev/sda1, and once mounted I looked for /boot/extlinux.conf - and found it - also found a /boog/extlinux folder with lots of files in it - I wondered if part of the issue was a bad mbr - I found examples of people initializing the mbr by copying the mbr.bin from the extlinux or syslinux install. I don''t see one in the extlinux folders - this is xenserver on the machine at the moment - but I found /usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin So I did: cp /tmp/sda/usr/share/syslinux/mbr.bin /tmp umount /tmp/sda dd if=/tmp/mbr.bin of=/dev/sda When I rebooted I got a different result. Missing operating system. I know that the syslinux mbr file probably isn''t right for the extlinux in place - so now I''ll try to track down an extlinux mbr file - I figured it was worth a shot. But I don''t see one in the installed xenserver. Maybe I''ll find one on the xenserver iso. Thanks - any more advice / insite appreciated - still wondering if I will get past this only to find xenserver / xcp are missing a driver or if it''s really all just about extlinux not installing properly for some reason. Does anyone know if there is a way from the xenserver or xcp iso to force a reinstall of extlinux? Re: fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
Looks like there is no cpio in the xcp install disk. There is a cpiofile python library. But that won''t execute. I opted to go back to centos 5.2 (convenient iso) and when I extract initrd I done see a file containing "megaraid" or mega anything. I''m going to try to compare the initrd from the xcp disk or the xenserver disk and see if I can see what''s different. Then I guess I need to copy the missing driver, recompress the initrd and cross my fingers? Thanks! Will keep plugging away... Re: fresh xcp 1.6 & xenserver install fails on first boot (kernel not found).
There is a console option. Will do. iirc I mentioned seeing a message "can''t find kernel" followed by a "boot:" buried in the gibberish. I posted a picture before. The /boot/extlinux.conf looked ok, and I reinstalled the mbr - changing the mbr changes the results - but I''ll capture that and post as well. And when I un pack the initrd I don''t see a file that looks like a megaraid driver but I haven''t done a thorough search yet. I''d expect to see one though?
