Hello, I''m facing a quite starnge issue. I am using Xen 3.2.1 that is bundled in debian Lenny. There are 3 HV windows 2003R2 hosts on my dom0 and i''m facing the same issue on all of this guests. When I try to attach a new block device (mount an iso cdrom) I do from dom0: sudo xm block-attach domainname file:/path.tomy.file.iso hdc:cdrom r The command completes without warning nor error and block list shows the new block device in the guest. ... 5632 0 0 1 -1 -1 /local/domain/0/backend/vbd/4/5632 Unfortunately in the cdrom never appear in the windows explorer whereas the windows device manager show up a new Xen Black Device driver. Even further, if I have to detach the block device. Windows guest pops up telling me that the device (that I can''t see) can now be removed.... :/! If I add the config informations in the config file and recreate the guest... the CDRom appear at boot time. But of course reboot is not an acceptable way of mounting a cd, even for a windows user! :) Does anyone has ever faced that? Or nay idea? _______________________________________________ Xen-users mailing list Xen-users@lists.xensource.com http://lists.xensource.com/xen-users

Or nay idea? The only method I found that worked was to ensure the device exists at boot time, then you can change the CD at any time without a reboot. Though I also found very strange behaviour within windows if I tried to ''remove'' the CD by pointing it to /dev/null.... Perhaps it would be better to create a "blank cd" ie, an iso file with no files in it to use as the bootup iso file. This was with windows 2008R2 and debian lenny xen... PS, the only other option I can think of is you might need to manually allocate a drive letter in windows before it will show up in My Computer... Hope this helps... Later versions of Xen allow qemu to disable the emulated harddisks but leave the emulated cdrom which allows things to work a lot better. Re: [Xen-users] block attach in windows HVM guest
I have another Debian dom0 runing HVM windows 2003R2 flawlessly. I can mount and unmount CD Even if the VM was *created* without any cdrom. That''s what makes me thinks I have configuration mistake (I have to say that the working dom0 is not up to date and claim for update of linux-imge-2.6.26-2-xen and its modules). Anyhow, I''ll try to see if blank CD is a efficient workaournd. Thanks for this idea. RE: [Xen-users] block attach in windows HVM guest
Yes I''m using GPLPV. I remmeber that things worked ok before installing GPLPV (i think I remmeber...) But as I said I have another dom0 on which it works as expected (earlier version GPLPV and earlier version of xen and kernel stuffs... but still 3.2.1). This would suggest lastest version of GPLPV drivers breaks things with hot block attachement? If Anyone what''s to share version number and experience relative to this issue... could be helpful. RE: [Xen-users] block attach in windows HVM guest
No in fact I now remmeber the problem first occured *before* installing GPLPV driver on the guests Le vendredi 13 août 2010 à 11:21 +1000, James Harper a écrit :> > On 13/08/10 10:36, Alexandre Chapellon wrote: > > > Hello, > > > > > > I''m facing a quite starnge issue. > > > > > > I am using Xen 3.2.1 that is bundled in debian Lenny. > > > Unfortunately in the cdrom never appear in the windows explorer whereas > > > the windows device manager show up a new Xen Black Device driver.
