wine users - Feb 2009 - Verifying CD presence fails

I'm working to run a program Bar-Ilan Responsa (a research utility for
Jewish texts) under Wine.  It needs to verify the presence of a CD to run - as
far as I know, there is no crack for it.

Using Wine 1.1.14 on Ubuntu 8.10, I get the following console output:

Is there any hope for running this under wine?

Looks like it's using kernel driver to talk to the CD-ROM. Those currently
do not work on Wine.
