wine users - Jan 2009 - Text distortions

I installed wine from the ubuntu (8.10) repos on sunday (2009-01-25) and at
first the menus were white text on white background. Then I followed fixes on
the wine ubuntu page:

I don't understand why the menus are distorted.  Is this common? I searched
the faq and didn't see anything that applied to this particular issue.
