It started in wine rc1 played with minor issues and craps out at some point in
the game, now it doesn't work at all.

I confirm that there is a regression with the latest wine on this game. My version of wine was wine-rc-3, i have test with wine 0.59 it works With windows 9x version selected in winecfg, the error message is "access violation" with Win 2K/XP version there is a privileged exception
