Hello everyone, I'm running Wine wine-0.9.55 on Ubuntu 710. I'm trying to run EuroTalk Interactive language learning software. It installs and starts fine, flawlessly, but when I start an exercise, I keep on hitting: operating system : Windows XP Service Pack 2 free disk space : 99,69 GB executable : TalkNow.exe exec. date/time : 2002-10-23 13:40 version : 1.1.9.1 exception class : TEMException exception message : MCI Error: There is an undetectable problem in loading the specified device driver. main thread ($16): $004C0142 TalkNow.exe EtMedia 528 TEtMedia.mciTryCommand $004C02C1 TalkNow.exe EtMedia 565 TEtMedia.mciOpen $004BFC3F TalkNow.exe EtMedia 276 TEtMedia.MediaOpen $004BFF50 TalkNow.exe EtMedia 411 TEtMedia.SetMediaIsOpen $004C4E9D TalkNow.exe Screen 225 TForm_Screen.StartSpeakers $004E5A13 TalkNow.exe WordsPractice 125 TForm_WordsPractice.StartMessage $004BAD9F TalkNow.exe cDIBPanel 1095 TCustomDIBContainer.WndProc $00508B8F TalkNow.exe TalkNow 81 TalkNow thread $1C: $FFFFE410 ???>> created by main thread ($16) at:$0049D6FF TalkNow.exe madExcept 2347 ThreadExceptFrame modules: $00400000 TalkNow.exe 1.1.9.1 C:\PROG~FBU\EuroTalk\TALK~JUJ $7B820000 KERNEL32.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7BC10000 ntdll.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7C6C0000 winedos.dll c:\windows\system32 $7CA20000 riched20.dll 5.30.23.1215 c:\windows\system32 $7CA60000 riched32.dll 5.1.2600.0 c:\windows\system32 $7CAA0000 olepro32.dll 5.0.4522.0 c:\windows\system32 $7CBC0000 imm32.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7CCF0000 msacm32.dll c:\windows\system32 $7CD10000 msacm32.drv c:\windows\system32 $7CDF0000 midimap.dll c:\windows\system32 $7CE10000 winealsa.drv c:\windows\system32 $7D350000 uxtheme.dll 10.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7E500000 winex11.drv 10.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7E6C0000 ws2_32.dll 4.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7E6F0000 wsock32.dll 4.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7E710000 winmm.dll c:\windows\system32 $7E790000 comdlg32.dll 4.0.0.950 c:\windows\system32 $7E830000 shlwapi.dll 6.0.2800.1692 c:\windows\system32 $7E890000 shell32.dll 5.0.3900.6975 c:\windows\system32 $7E990000 winspool.drv 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7E9C0000 comctl32.dll 5.81.4704.1100 c:\windows\system32 $7EA80000 version.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7EAB0000 lz32.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7EAC0000 iphlpapi.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7EAE0000 rpcrt4.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7EB40000 ole32.dll 10.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7EBF0000 oleaut32.dll 10.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7EC80000 advapi32.dll 5.1.2600.2180 c:\windows\system32 $7ECD0000 gdi32.dll 10.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 $7ED70000 user32.dll 10.0.0.0 c:\windows\system32 I think this is something related to the sound system. Is there a Wine configuration that might fix this, or is this a bug in in Wine? If so, how do I file it as a bug? I'm pretty new to Wine and don't know much about debugging it. It seems like this program is very very close to working, which would be great, because they have a whole bunch of language learning titles. Run 'winecfg' and select sound options. You might try using OSS instead of ALSA, setting driver to emulation, or disabling sound altogether.

It's set to ALSA, as it should be (for a long time now). It's not using emulation. Sound works. When I click "test" on the winecfg sound setup panel, I hear the test sound. I'm using the package that is in the Wine repos for Ubuntu. I'll be upgrading to 0.9.56 as soon as it hits that repos (probably in the next couple of days) and I'll try again, but obviously, this is an old bug in some old part of Wine. Anything else this could be? I actually tried this whole thing one year ago: http://crossover.codeweavers.com/pipermail/discuss/2007-February/010637.html getting almost exactly the same error. This is an old version of the program, from 2002, so it's definitely not using any fancy new APIs. Whatever this bug is, it's probably affecting other similar programs. Thanks for any tips on this. Let me know if there are any tests I can do or anything else I can do that would help debug this. ____________________________________________________________________________________ Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo!
