Hello, I've been having some problems with Planescape and I can't seem to be able to solve them (I'm neither a Linux nor a Wine wiz, if you know what I mean). Before I state my problem, I have to say I have used 3 Wine releases, the 03/2005 one, that couldn't even start Planescape (I got it as a binary .deb file), the 05/2005 one (Compiled from source), and the current one (06/2005, also compiled from source). Both source-compiled ones have the same problem, and it's not the distribution, or the computer, since I've reinstalled my distro many times, and I've upgraded my motherboard (And CPU, RAM, GPU...).I'm using Ubuntu Hoary. So, here goes.Planescape installs well, it boots up well (I followed the instructions on the Wine App database),BUT, there is no sound (Sound works well on all other apps, though I haven't tried other Wine-emulated apps), and the X mouse-cursor is constantly flikerring near the Planescape one.The mouse problem is not all that annoying (Ok, mabye it is ;) ), but I can't live without sound.I haven't heard about sound problems from anyone else, and I've checked (almost) everywhere! Ubuntu has some problems with sound, but there are many tutorials on how to solve them, and I've followed them.Sound works well on all other apps, although If I have Ruthmbox or XMMS or whatever running in the backround, I can't hear any sound in e.g ZSNES (Meaning, in Ubuntu the sound card can't be used by more than one application). So, unless Wine tries to acsess the sound card in a *dual* way, It's not Ubuntu.*Phew*.That was long. Anyway I'm afraid that I never had any problems with sound so I don't know what to suggest on that front. Except what sound driver are you using in wine? I'm not sure where to look if you are using the registry but in ~/.wine/config the lines are in the [WinMM] section. But if you do find a solution in the mean time then please let me know so I can update the AppDB page to help future users. On a slightly different note I'd suggest keeping an eye on GemRB[0]. It's an open source engine replacement for the Infinity Engine games (PS:T, BG 1&2 (inc exp packs) and IWD 1&2). Currently the games aren't playable but progress has been steady and looks very promising indeed. Grahame
I thank you for your reply,Mr.Grahame White. Although there is no ~/.wine/config file in the 06/2005 version, I'm pretty sure that the driver used is ALSA (By looking in winecfg), which is correct. But, even in the older versions, I tried both OSS (The default) and ALSA (By uncommenting it), and It still wouldn't work.Has anyone tried PS:T on Ubuntu, and has gotten sound? I'm pretty sure it's Ubuntu. On a sidenote, I'm using the standard AC'97 sound "card" on my crummy Soltek Motherboard. Also, can anyone tell me how to get rid of the X cursor wilst playing PS:T, if only using a workaround (Like making the cursor dissapear in the terminal, not just for wine but for X, too). I certaingly plan on posting the good news, if they ever come up.I always hated when someone had the same exact problem with me, and the only thing he posted was "Hey I got it Fixed!".Anyways, Thanks! Case is closed and we are the WINNERS!!! 1) It seems Ubuntu has general problems with sound. So, to get sound in Wine you must overcome these general problems (There are thousands of Howtos in ubuntuforums and a nice & quick solution in ubuntuguide). But, there is still no sound in wine. So, I compiled & installed wine-2005/05/24 (Since that one is the last one with the config file and the 2005/06/28 version is giving me problems, look here: http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-users/2005/07/0080.html). 2) Next, I installed Timidity and freepats. 3) I went to my config file and under "WinMM", I uncommented the ALSA line. 4) Under "dsound" I uncommented the HardwareAcceleration = "Emulation" line, and voilla! It's done! Concerning the flickering of the Xcursor, along with the Planescape one, you could either find a program to hide the Xcursor or use a workaround I found (Quite a long one, though).Place a non-empty CD (Non-Empty counts, and put a NON PS:T CD) in the CD tray in which PS expects to find the PS:T CD.Wait till it propts you to enter CD2 or something. CTRL+ALT F1 (Or up to F6) to enter the console and eject the (Non-Empty) CD.Place the needed PS:T CD in the tray, close it, and CTRL+ALT F7 back to X.Wait for ~2 secs and then go back to the console.Wait a bit (~5 Secs) until you are confident that the prompt screen has passed and the videos have started (All this wilst you can't see anything of what's going on, just a idle console), then go back to X (Using the CTRL... keys).Voilla! The cursor is no longer there! Stupid, but...It works. For me. Thank you all!!! I LOVE WINE! I LOVE WHISKEY!!! Oh, and concerning the cursor problem, forget about that stupid workaround, here's what to do: 1)Download "unclutter".Install it. 2)Open up a terminal and write down: "unclutter -idle 1 -jitter 1000000" ...without the quotes Be sure to keep the terminal open or the effect is gone! Play happily! If you double click the left (or right) mouse button, the cursor will appear for a second and then *poof*! It's gone! __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
