wine users - Apr 2004 - Windows Media Encoder on Wine: Works!

To answer my own question:  Windows Media Encoder 8 works fine under Wine. 
I'm using it now to WMA-encode files captured from the audio cards, and
it's a
lot less disruptive than firing up real W-----s under a virtual machine system.
