Not that I'm aware of.  Civilisation III actually states in it's minimum
specs a '1024x768' capable display (see www.civ3.com, bottom left
corner).

Civ3 works, but a weird resolution problem

Perhaps thats the only resolution the game plays in?
Try it under windows to find out...
(Same probz with old games, like StarCraft etc...running only
at 640x480).
