Is it possible to mix router and switch mode in same network?
Would it be possible to mix the router and switch mode in the same tinc network? I’m running tinc for a couple of years now in switch mode. It works very well. I have a dozen of vm’s connected to a couple of VM’s on 2 physical nodes. Those VM’s on the physical nodes are connected via a 2nd interface to an openvswitch bridge on which those physical nodes provide the connection outside. As extra thing, all tinc nodes are in the same /24. But now I need to change my laptop (MacOS big sur) to router mode to use the utun device. The utun device doesn’t allow to work in switch mode. But would this work when I combine modes? And if not what changes would I need to make to keep the current setup with the bridges on the physical nodes in tact? Or almost intact? What I did for my Big Sur install on tinc, not sure it’s recommended or a good idea though, is to run openvpn on one of the nodes in my network which bridged into tinc. Therefore, I could use all the routing features of tinc through that node over plain IPSEC or PPPoE which macOS (and many mobile/other devices) handle much better.
