is token ring supported by pxelinux or only ethernet?

All cards above 'IBM Token Ring PCI Adapter 2' support PXE and RPL, the old 'IBM Token Ring PCI card' only supports RPL. Use the 'PXE 1 Rom' for booting clients, since the 'PXE 2' rom doesn't seem to work for me. Especially the 'low profile token ring adapteer' comes with the PXE 2 rom preinstalled.> I was also interested if it was possible to upload some microcode to > support a newer version of pxe...IBM has updated PXE roms available, and you'll need a rom version of at least 3.16 (AFAIR), since the old roms don't do anything good. You can verify the rom version while booting the client, it shows at the 'AL-' and 'BL-' fields. These should show something with '16', every older number should be updated. And no, these are not the numbers the rom disk has ... BTW, this is working quite good on about 1000 clients for two years now, with token ring on the client, ATM with lan-emulating token ring on the server (IBM RS/6000 with AIX 4.3.3). And yes, token-ring is still used. I know of several banking and insurance customers still using it. Some plan to migrate to ethernet, though. If anyone needs more info on this, there's some documentation for the PXE rom (and the RPL variant too ...) on the IBM web site. Also ask here, and I'll try to answer. It's the same rom.>I also have a TR port embedded in an IBM Network > Station which will support PXE.I know these. The adapter is PXE capable, the only problem is to update the on-board PXE rom. I managed to do this with an old Networkstation Manager installation. The client needs to boot this once, and you'll see that the PXE rom will be updated.>That is my only exposure to PXE so far, but it is proving difficult to getting it working. If you have a card with PXE 1-Rom and AL >= PX14xxx I can help you with that.> Is it possible to upload microcode to these cards, or do you actually need > to physicall replace roms? It's a flash rom, and the downloaded file is actually a Dos diskette wich flashes the rom.> As far as these AL- BL- fields go, is there a reference anywhere as to > what they all stand for? It's called 'IBM Token-Ring Features', URL: ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/networking/ess/public/docs/853481798E78CDAC85256A17005946D3/ffp6cntl.pdf See chapter 2 (RPL/PXE) for the bios messages. BTW: You find this and the PXE roms at http://www.networking.ibm.com/support, choose 'IBM 16/4 Token Ring PCI adapter 2' (this one definitively supports PXE ...), 'Technical Documentation' will give you the above link, 'Downloads->Dos->PCI Flash, Version 3.nn PXE1' will give the PXE1 flash diskette.> > And yes, token-ring is still used. I haven't seen this anywhere, only 16 Mbit TR (switched or as a ring). You need AL xx5 PX16xx.> This is on my IBM Network Station, which for some reason, ignores Alt-S > when I press it. Maybe I have disable it in the BIOS, although I can't > where... I need to go into the setup to switch between RPL and PXE.It can also switch between RPL and PXE in the bios - press any key (maybe F1?) while switching it on, the bios password is preset to 'ibmncd'. I think this is the reason why you can't update it with a standard rom - the internal bios manages the card, and not (as usual) the card manages itself.> I'd be interested in knowing how to upgrade it to a new level. As said, I only managed it to upgrade with booting the network station manager image (with ML 5 or greater). This means you boot the BSD-based system from IBM. BTW: Which networkstation do you have there? Is it x86-based? 2200 and 2800 are x86-based, 100, 300 and 1000 are PowerPC-based. Which feature code does it have? 8364-xxx is the 2800, 8363-xxx is the 2200 AFAIR. You won't be able to boot PowerPC-based networkstations with pxelinux, since it's tied to x86-processors. But I think RPL is also only for x86-hardware, so it should be the correct hardware.> I've been > told I need PXE v2 to be able to try some OS/2 software but have been > unable to do so so far.I have seen 'workspace on demand' (which is also OS/2-based) on a NWS 2800.
