Need some advice on optimization
Hi I'm quite new to optimization algorithms and I could use some advice or pointers. I'm using ?optim (method L-BFGS-B) to optimize a function over a 60-dimensional parameter space. The function itself takes about 1 to 6 minutes to compute. It finds an optimum after 6 tot 24 hours, depending on the problem I need to solve. For me, speed is an issue and I would like to reduce this to 1

Effect display of proportional odds model
Dear useRs, I very much like the effect display of the proportional odds model on page 29 (Figure 8) of the following paper by John Fox: http://socserv.mcmaster.ca/jfox/Papers/logit-effect-displays.pdf It really gives a very concise overview of the model. I would like to use it to illustrate the proportional odds mixed models we fit here for a project on Diabetes but I can't seem to reproduce

Dear R-users, Is there a way to get p-values for a one-sided hypothesis test about a poisson mean? trouble with character \u00e2
Greetings R-wizards: For historical reasons I have filenames with the character "?" and have successfully used "\u00e2" in its place, with the hoped-for result on all my on-screen plots. However since R2.7.0 I have trouble with savePlot() when the file name includes that character as it does in this example: savePlot(paste("diagnostic ? vs a ", file.label,

texi2dvi instead of pdflatex in R2.7.0? and related bioc 2.2 builds
Dear lists: I am somewhat puzzled by the use of texi2dvi/pdflatex in R2.7.0. When building EBImage (bioconductor) with 2.7.0 I get the same error both in Windows and Linux, which reads the following: ** building package indices ... * DONE (EBImage) * creating vignettes ... ERROR /usr/bin/texi2dvi: pdflatex exited with bad status, quitting. Error in texi2dvi(file = bft, pdf = TRUE, clean =

var/sd and NAs in R2.7.0
Hello all, I just upgraded to R 2.7.0 and found that the behavior of 'var' and 'sd' have changed in the presence NAs (this wasn't explicit in the NEWS file, though I see it probably has to do with the change for cor/cov). Anyway, I just want to make sure that it was intentional to produce an error when there was all NAs and na.rm=TRUE, rather than returning an NA (like R

rpart.permutation, snow, rsprng binary files
Dear R-users, Does anyone of you have binary files for the packages rpart.permutation, snow and rsprng. I would like to use them in my classification tree. I know they are still at the 0.x development stage, though. Where can I get information on how to compile tar.gz files? I'm using windows XP with R 2.1.0. Thanks, Jan --------------------------------------------------------------------

last observation carried forward +1
Hi R-helpers I'm looking for a vectorised function which does missing value replacement as in last observation carried forward in the zoo package but instead of a locf, I would like the locf function to add +1 to each time a missing value occurred. See below for an example. > require(zoo) > x <- 5:15 > x[4:7] <- NA > coredata(na.locf(zoo(x))) [1] 5 6 7 7 7 7 7 12 13

bug in R 2.7.0 (PR#11497)
In the latest version R2.7.0 the following command does not work anymore: x <- eval(parse(prompt = paste("give value for x > "))) It does give the pompt, but the object x is not created. We think this is due to a bug in the function parse. best regards, Wout Slob ____________________________________________________________________________ DISCLAIMER:

rlm and lmrob error messages
Hello all, I'm using R2.7.0 (on Windows 2000) and I'm trying do run a robust regression on following model structure: model = "Y ~ x1*x2 / (x3 + x4 + x5 +x6)" where x1 and x2 are both factors (either 1 or 0) and x3.....x6 are numeric. The error code I get when running rlm(as.formula(model), data=daymean) is: error in rlm.default(x, y, weights, method = method, wt.method =

Reading JPEG file, converting to HEX
Colleagues, I am using R to assemble RTF documents (which are plain text). I need to embed a JPEG graphic that was created with R. I presume that the steps need to be: a. read the file into R b. convert the object to HEX format c. write the converted object to a textfile. If I read the file into R using readLines, I get the following (only the first 5 lines shown): > >

cannot load package "splines"
Greetings R-Helpers: I am trying to help a Chinese colleague who is experiencing difficulty loading my package. He is running WindowsXP and the Chinese version of R2.8.1. As you can see from his screen-copy (below), my package is successfully unpacked but cannot be loaded because splines balks when attempted to be loaded. Package mh1823 requires package survival, which in turn requires

proper use of textConnection
Colleagues, Using R2.7.0 in OS X, I am having trouble understanding the command textConnection. My situation is as follows: 1. I am trying to read a lengthy file (45000 lines) that has headers ~ every 1000 lines. read.table (or its variants) fail because of the recurrent headers. 2. My present approach is the following: a. use readLines to read the file, save as an array b. use grep

Packfor library-problem downloading
Hello, I'm a new user to R, and I was trying to install "packfor" in my R console and I always run into an error. I tried to search, in in the forum, someone that already might have made the same question, but all I could find was a general information how to install libraries in R. Pass through all that procedure (Package&Data->Package Installer->Local Source

What changed in the R Windows interface from v2.6.2 to v2.7.0?
Dear R-devel, I would like to launch the Rgui.exe from a Fortran console application (we will call this FortranCon.exe), that I have written myself. To do this, I send the command line "C:\Program Files\R\R-X.X.X\Rgui.exe" (where X.X.X is the version number) as an argument to the Windows API function CreateProcess (see http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms682425(VS.85).aspx)

Cannot update 2.8.1 packages: unable to access index for repository...
I am having trouble updating packages for R 2.8.1 in Windows XP. Note that I *am* able to update packages for R 2.7.0 (see bottom of posting) so this is not an Internet proxy problem. The steps I took were to (a) Copy over packages from my existing (2.7.0) library subdiretory to the R 2.8.1 library subdirectory. This included a long list of packages including RODBC, rpart, RGraphViz, ggplot2

UTF-8 patch for Samba 2.0.7
See description in the attached patch. -------------- next part -------------- This quick hack adds primitive support of UTF-8 as a server 'character set' to Samba 2.0.7. All file, share and user names are stored on server in UTF-8, and translated into client code page (not UCS2) on the fly. Additionally, server string conversion is added. Tested with Chinese and Russian Windows clients.
