Problems with snow and rpvm
Dear Friends, I'm trying to learn to use parallel computation using snow & rpvm Now, I have two boxes: 1) Pentium 4, pvm 3.4.5, R 2.2.0 with FreeBSD 5.4 (box uffbsd); 2) PowerPC, pvm 3.4.5, R 2.1.1 with Debian Linux latest stable (box powerpclinux); I'm using the instructions in (found in snow.pdf) http://www.stat.uiowa. edu/~luke/R/cluster/cluster.html. Now ** from the box

Erlang-style message-passing in R: Rmpi, Snow, NetWorkSpaces, etc.
I see about 7 different R packages for multi-process parallel programming. Which do you think is the best, most complete, and most robust to pick for general purpose Erlang-style message-passing programming in R, and why? First here's my use case, and then my analysis so far. I often have code whose basic organization looks something like this: 1. Fetch step: For each date, gather up or

rpvm/snow packages on a cluster with dual-processor machines
Hi, does anybody know how to use the dual processors in the machines of a cluster? I am using R with rpvm and snow packages. I usually start pvm daemon and add host machines first, and then run R to start my computing work. But I find that only one processor in each machine is used in this way and the other one always stays idle. Is there any simple way to tell pvm to use the two processors at

rpvm/snow packages on a cluster with dual-processor machi nes
Caveat: I've only played with this a couple of years ago... I believe you can just add each host _twice_ (or as many times as the number of CPUs at that host) to get both CPUs to work. accented characters in isolinux
hey people I'm new to the list and would like to say thanks to everyone that has worked on syslinux/isolinux. It's one of those tools that everyone uses at some stage but no-one ever really takes much notice of it - mainly because *it just works*. So congrats ... Now onto my question - I am customizing Fedora Core and I want to change the isolinux boot.msg screen to display some

kernel update with yum - no grub entry
Hi people I am new to this list - actually I am one of (probably) a few who are jumping ship from WBEL. I feel like a bit of a scab jumping over at this time - but we all make mistakes eh? I have installed CentOS and ran 'yum update' and installed everything it prompted me for. After a reboot, I realised I had booted into the same original kernel-2.4.21-20.EL.c0smp and not the updated

Snow & rvpm
At office, using the internal LAN at my disposal, I'm having a go at parallel computing - to begin with - with pvm, rpvm & snow. The two boxes are as follows Remote machine uffbsd: CPU: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz (1994.13-MHz 686-class CPU) Origin = "GenuineIntel" Id = 0xf24 Stepping = 4 real memory = 260046848 (248 MB) This machine NbBSD: CPU: Mobile Intel(R)

bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use)
I can't figure out what is causing the error message of [1999/10/13 11:39:42, 0] lib/util_sock.c:open_socket_in(671) bind failed on port 139 socket_addr=0.0.0.0 (Address already in use) in my logs and thus preventing smbd from serving up connections. How can I track down what is causing this? Samba has been working great and now I must have done something but I don't know what. The

Authenticating AD users and Local users
Thank you for replying! I can login with my Active Directory credentials, but I can’t login using the local CentOS “svc_dictations” account. I created the local account usingusing “adduser”, “smbpasswd”, and then updating my smb.conf file (below). Thank you, Brian [global] workgroup = YALE password server = ad1.yu.yale.edu<http://ad1.yu.yale.edu>

SNOW: Simple Parallel Computing in R
The package `snow' (Simple Network of Workstations), originally announced in early form about a year ago on this list, is now available from CRAN. Snow implements a simple mechanism for using a workstation cluster for ``embarrassingly parallel'' computations in R. The interface, which is based in part on the Python CoW (Cluster of Workstations; http://www.scipy.org/) package, is

snow package on multi core unix box
Is the rmpi package (or rpvm) needed to exploit multiple cores on a single unix box using the snow package. The documentation of the package does not provide info about setting up a single machine with multiple cores. Also, if how effective is it to run a bayesian simulation on parallel (or distributed) processors using the snow package. Thanks, Saeed

Looking for suggestions on how to debug pvm/snow proc's
Hi All - I'm running a faily long script that uses rpvm & snowFT to spawn off multiple processes with the 'clusterApplyFT' function. Specifically, what happens is that the head node generates a number of seed clusters that are then spawned off to the pvm cluster (in this case, nodes on a 4 dual-core machine) using clusterApplyFT to apply a function to each seed cluster that

Samba 2.0.6 and PAM problems on Linux
I have installed Samba 2.0.6 and everything is working wonderfully except for some PAM authentication problems on my Debian potato samba server. When a client tries to connect to a share on my server I get lots of the following before I am ever asked for the password or the connection times out, this take a few minutes to happen. (My username is 'servis', my machine is 'brian',

How to increase the printing speed
Hi Brian, Thank you very much. Now I am able to the printer on Win95 box. But I don't know why the printing is very slow. Infact the printer waits for a while before taking the next page. Is there a way to increase the printing speed. Another important thing is that I cannot use any printer option in the printer panel on IRIX box. It says "printer type unkown".Is ther a way

question about Rpvm, SNOW, etc.
Dear R-devel, Inspired by Michael Li's talk at JSM, I decided to try rpvm and snow on our two linux boxes. It only took me a couple of hours of screwing around to get it working (sooner if I had RTFM). Our setup is: 2 dual PIII-866 Xeons, one with 2GB RDRAM, the other with 1.28GB RDRAM. The first machine is acting as the NIS/NFS server. both /usr and /home are exported to the second

A question regarding random effects in 'aov' function
Hi, I am doing an analysis to see if these is tissue specific effects on the gene expression data . Our data were collected from 6 different labs (batch effects). lab 1 has tissue type 1 and tissue type 2, lab 2 has tissue 3, 4,5,6. The other labs has one tissue type each. The 'sample' data is as below:

problem fitting linear mixed models
Hello, I'm fitting linear mixed models to gene-expression data from microarrays, in a data set where 4608 genes are studied. For a sample of 5 subjects and for each gene we observe the expression level (Intensity) in four different tissues: N, Tp, Tx and M. I want to test whether the expression level is different accross tissues. Between-subject variability is modeled with a random

socket clusters on snow dies easily
hello, I'm using R 1.8.1 with the lastest snow package on FreeBSD 4.9. However, when I try to using socket clusters, it's very unstable. Sometimes it dies half way when I run parSapply(), sometimes it dies when cluster connection is idle. I create a socket cluster by following cmd cl = makeCluster("foo", type = "SOCK", outfile="/tmp/rafanlog");
