nested 'while' loops
Hi everyone, I'm using the following code to go over every element of a data frame (row wise). The problem I am facing is that the outer 'x' variable is not incrementing itself, thus, only one row of values is obtained, and the program does not proceed to the next row. This is the code: while(x<=coln) { while(y<=rown) { n<-as.numeric(df[[y]][x]);

I wish to exclude the obvious price difference, which doesn’t seem to carry as much weight as I would have thought. Besides, I have noticed many former Splus users gravitating towards R,

Fw: Forcing password changes using SAMBA as PDC
Hi, I did as suggested, and still have the same problem. I am still able to login to samba with another users password that does not require password changes. This seems to me that the problem is related to PAM password changing. I have tried change the various PAM options in the smb.conf file, but cannot get it to work. Depending on the options, it either asks for a password or not. When it asks

mgcv: how select significant predictor vars when using gam(...select=TRUE) using automatic optimization
I have 11 possible predictor variables and use them to model quite a few target variables. In search for a consistent manner and possibly non-manual manner to identify the significant predictor vars out of the eleven I thought the option "select=T" might do. Example: (here only 4 pedictors) first is vanilla with "select=F" >

column extraction by name ?
I have a data frame (df) with colums x, y and z. e.g. df <- data.frame(x = sample(4), y = sample(4), z = sample(4)) I can extract column z by: df$z or df[3] I can also extract columns x,y by: df[1:2] or by df[-3]. Is it possible to extract x,y columns in a "symbolic" fashion i.e. by equivalent of df[-z] (which is illegal) ??? Or alternativeley, is there an equivalent of
