colMeans in a data.frame with numeric and character data
Hi all,
I would like to know if it is posible by, someway, to get colMeans from
a data.frame with numeric as well as character data, dispersed all over
the object. Note that I would like to get colMeans neglecting character
data.
I am really in need of some function proceeding in that way…
All the best

trouble reading in datasets
Dear All,
I was trying to follow some of the examples in Venables and Ripley "Modern applied ... with S-plus"
I have downloaded a copy of the iris data set and loaded into R. :
however I cannot use the apply command (from p47):
> apply (iris, 2 ,mean)
Error in sum(..., na.rm = na.rm) : invalid "mode" of argument
> apply (iris, c(2) ,mean)

Using Function
Hi,
I have some simple statistics to calculate for a large
number of variables.
I created a simple function to apply to variables.
I would like the variable name to be placed automatically.
I tried the following function but is not working.
desc = function(x){
media = mean(x, na.rm=T)
desvio = sd(x, na.rm=T)
cv = desvio/media*100

more on apply on data frame
Hi R People:
Several of you pointed out that using "tapply" on a data frame will work on
the iris data frame.
I'm still having a problem.
The iris data frame has 150 rows, 5 variables. The first 4 are numeric,
while the last is a factor, which has the Species names.
I can use tapply for 1 variable at a time:
>tapply(iris[,1],iris[,5],mean)
setosa versicolor virginica

alternatives to latex() or xtable() ?
Hello everyone,
I have several problems with exporting to LaTeX the output of

multiple tapply
Hi folk,
I tried this and it works just perfectly
tapply(iris[,1],iris[5],mean)
but, how to obtain a single table from multiple variables?
In tapply x is an atomic object so this code doesn't work
tapply(iris[,1:4],iris[5],mean)
Thanx and great summer holidays

Summary using by() returns character arrays in a list
I use by() to generate a summary statistics like so:
Lbys <- by(dat[Nidx], dat$LipTest, summary)
where Nidx is an index vector with names picking out the columns in the
data frame dat.
This returns a list of character arrays (see below for str() output) where
the columns are named correctly but the rownames are empty strings and the
values are strings prepended with the summary

means by column after split
Colleagues
----------------------------------
System info:
R version rw1020 on NT
ESS using emacs ver. 20.4
----------------------------------
I need to get the means for each column of a dataframe in the list
created by splitting a data frame. At present, I am getting the mean of all
columns in aggregate.
The structure of the unsplit data is:

a problem 'cor' function
Hi list,
One of my co-workers found this problem with 'cor' in his code and I confirm it too (see below). He's using R 2.2.1 under Win 2K and I'm using R 2.3.0 under Win XP.

saving sublist lda object with save.image()
Greetings R experts,
I'm having some difficulty recovering lda objects that I've saved within sublists using the save.image() function. I am running a script that exports a variety of different information as a list, included within that list is an lda object. I then take that list and create a list of that with all the different replications I've run. Unfortunately I've been

kernlab kpca predict
Hi!
The kernlab function kpca() mentions that new observations can be transformed by using predict. Theres also an example in the documentation, but as you can see i am getting an error there (As i do with my own data). I'm not sure whats wrong at the moment. I haven't any predict functions written by myself in the workspace either. I've tested it with using the matrix version and the

fill 0-row data.frame with 1 line of NAs
Dear all
Is there a simpler method to achieve the following: When I obtain an
empty data.frame after subsetting, I need for it to contain one line
of NAs. Here's a dummy example:
> (.xb <- iris[ iris$Species=='zz', ])

<0 rows> (or 0-length row.names)
> dim(.xb)

unexpected behavior of trellis calls inside a user-defined function
I am making a battery of levelplots and wireframes for several fitted
models. I wrote a function that takes the fitted model object as the
sole argument and produces these plots. Various strange behavior
ensued, but I have identified one very concrete issue (illustrated
below): when my figure-drawing function includes the addition of
points/lines to trellis plots, some of the

multiple plots per page using hist and pdf
Hello,
I am puzzled by the behavior of hist() when generating multiple plots
per page on the pdf device. In the following example two pdf files
are generated. The first results in 4 plots on one pdf page as
expected. However, the second, which swaps one of the plot() calls
for hist(), results in a 4 page pdf with one plot per page.
How might I get the histogram with 3 other scatter

I tried both of these three versions with ylim as suggested, none work: I
am getting only single (pch = 16) not overlayed (pch =3) everytime.
