degrees of freedom question
R2.3, WinXP Dear all, I am using the following functions: f1 = Phi1+(Phi2-Phi1)/(1+exp((log(Phi3)-log(x))/exp(log(Phi4))) f2 = Phi1+(Phi2-Phi1)/(1+exp((log(Phi3)-log(r)-log(x))/exp(log(Phi4))) subject to the residual weighting Var(e[i]) = sigma^2 * abs( E(y) )^(2*Delta) Here is my question, in steps: 1. Function f1 is separately fitted to two different datasets corresponding to

apply( )
I have a question that must have a simple answer (but eludes me). I need a row-by-row logical comparison across three numeric variables in a data frame: foo$x, foo$y, foo$z. The logic is if( x < y || x > z ) 1 else 0 for a particular row. It is simple and very inefficient to use for(i in 1:length(foo$x)){ } loops. How can I accomplish this using sappy( ) / lapply( ) / apply( ) or

[OT] Fyodor terminates SCO nmap rights -- how about Samba?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 As you all may know Fyodor of nmap fame has terminated SCO's rights to distribute namp with its products. See: http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2004/02/27/1077676955381.html I know this is off-topic, but I am interested in opinions on the subject of SCO using Samba in it's products while they declare the GPL is unconstitutional and invalid.

p-values
I apologize if this question is not completely appropriate for this list. I have been using SAS for a while and am now in the process of learning some C and R as a part of my graduate studies. All of the statistical packages I have used generally yield p-values as a default output to standard procedures. This week I have been reading "Testing Precise Hypotheses" by J.O. Berger

From: Dag Wieers > Sorry to interrupt but he was describing how you appeared in previous > postings. And I have to say that I felt the same way reading some of your postings. Really? Then I'll re-read them since there's been a second confirmation. Just know that I wasn't trying to make it about good/bad. I'm just trying to make the point that companies aren't just

Discussion of the GPL on Groklaw
I'm not looking to start a discussion of the GPL on R-devel; I'm just giving a reference because the subject of the GPL, the license under which R is issued, has been brought up on this list. If you want to follow some of the legal discussion of the Free Software Foundation's General Public License (GPL), the web site groklaw.net is required reading. One reason is because Pamela

911 and lawsuits
Just curious if any of the Asterisk installers are doing anything special to protect themselves from a possible lawsuit caused by 911 failure during a Asterisk/computer crash? I realize that any traditional PBX or even a phone line can fail but, anything running on a computer is probably going to be less reliable than most PBXs. Anybody requiring customers to acknowledge and sign any kind of

Verizon-Vonage Lawsuit
May be slightly off topic, but I was wondering what everyone thinks of this latest ruling against Vonage? Does anyone really know what Verizon hold patents for, and could those patents possible affect anything in Asterisk? Who knows who Verizon will go after next. Some of these machines are running SCO 5.0.7 which comes with a Samba version 2.2, the other machines running SCO 5.0.6 do not have Samba. RedHat forks OpenSSH?
It has just come to my notice that Redhat is planning to ship a forked version of OpenSSH. The change goes beyond the usual patches applied to RPMs in the build process: Redhat have built their own OpenSSH tarball and are using that in their source RPM instead of the official release distribution. If you are interested, have a look at the openssh-3.9p1-7.src.rpm from the Fedora development/

SCO remove() and unlink()
There was a patch merged in on 9/29 that changed remove() calls to unlink(): - (djm) Merged big SCO portability patch from Tim Rice <tim at multitalents.net> Does SCO's libc not include remove()? Note that sftp-server.c is currently using remove. The reason I ask is I'd like to keep the portable tree as close to openbsd as possible, and if we need remove() for SCO we should

Question with DNAT
Hi All I have had a look through the documentation but I can''t see how to do this. I want to setup DNAT for an incoming connection. The connection must be forwarded to a server on a masqueraded server behind the firewall. The tricky part is I need to forward to a different port to the one that the request arrived on. I can do this: firewall.public.ip:5800 ->
