row selection based on median in data frame
Hi. I am having trouble thinking of an easy way to grab rows out of a data frame. I want to select the rows with a median value when the rows are similar. A simple example is this table, which I could read into a data frame. I would like to find a new data frame with only the rows with a median value for the "c" column given a certain "a" value. For example, the c values

ignoring SIGPIPE causing problems in pipes
Hi. I'm writing an article on network backups, and instead of using my old ssh1 software, I decided to go with openssh all the way. I got the hang of the openssh way of doing protocol 2 public key authentication, but ssh is failing to terminate when a pipe is broken. I am ssh-ing to a remote host and doing a cat or zcat of a dump file, then on the localhost, I'm using restore to extract

getting data frame rows out of a by object
Hi. I can quickly create a by object that selects rows from a data frame. After that, though, I don't know how to merge the rows back into a data frame that I can use. Here is an example where there is a data frame with three columns, a, b, and c. I update it so that there are two rows for each combination of a and b. I use by to select the subgroups of rows that share the same a and b

proposal for cosmetic change: prompts
Hi. If I submit patches that make the prompts look more like prompts, would those patches be welcome? Permission denied using mount.cifs
I'm having a strange problem mounting a share from a Windows 2003 server using cifs: mount.cifs //osirus.ficticious.org/inetpub /inetpub -ouser=transfer,pass=dkfhjdjskd It comes back immediately with: mount error 13 = Permission denied Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs) However, the command below works. (abeit with about a 15 second wait before it comes back):

Disappointed
I have subscribed to this list for about a month now. I am just a MarkDown user; new to it. Using it within *Ema Personal Wiki & Epistle* for Android. I am not trying to implement this cool little light language into an app I am developing; maybe someday. I signed up because I thought I might get some MarkDown use tips. *I have learned nothing from this list.* I have witnessed a lot of

unable to join 2000 to samba domain
I have a situation where some 2000 machines are unable to join the samba domain. We have about 50 machines of which two thirds are 2000 boxes. All of the 9x boxes log to the samba domain with no trouble. Of the 2000 machines we have two groups - some IBM's and some Dell's with the Dell's being a couple of months older. All of the IBM's joined the domain without problems. None of

Samba 3 by Example & Migrations
One topic I can't find in either Samba 3 by Example or the Offical Samba 3 Howto & Reference Guide is that of migrating from a Samba3 server to a newer Samba 3 server (meaning newer hardware in this case). We are currently using the smbpasswd backend. I plan to move to tdbsam but that hasn't been done yet. All of the servers in question are running either whitebox 3 or redhat 9

passwd-file access
Using passwd-file authentication I run into some problems.. This is my passwd file: user:0cc175b9c0f1b6a831c399e269772661[34]:6660:6660:0:/some/mail/directory/user:0::: My MUA tells me after enter my user/pass that the server disconnected, OK. So I netcat into the imap server, and issue an "C: LOGIN user a" in which case I get the error "Fatal: USER environment missing".

Port 32230 anyone?
Greetings, Yet another strange pattern of traffic is being halted at the shorewall firewall, but I have no idea what this is. IANA shows the ports unassigned, and a net search yields only some of the same questions - what is this port? There are two machines as SOURCE, on the same class C network, adjacent, even, sending one connect attempt to TCP port 32230 every five minutes. I''m

trouble installing R-patched (R-2.12.0) when TMPDIR is specified
I noticed that if I specify the location of TMPDIR in .bashrc as follows on a Linux 64 bit system: export TMPDIR=/store/home/ayee/.tmp I get the following error message when installing R make[3]: Entering directory `/home/ayee/R-patched/src/library/base' building package 'base' make[4]: Entering directory `/home/ayee/R-patched/src/library/base' /bin/sh: line 8:

root prexec/postexec & login scripts
I have a perl script that I'd like to use to create windows 9x login scripts at login time but I cannot get the process to work right. I have RedHat 7.3 (actually the k12ltsp v2.1.0 which is a modified RH7.3) set up as a domain controller which is working well. Manually created login scripts run fine on the workstations at login. I'm using a netlogon script I found at

Re: Samba - root preexec & login scripts
Last night at home, and on a second system today at work, I tried putting in the sample preexec statement contained in the smb.conf man page to check it's effect on the domain logons. Just like the preexec for the perl script it kills domain logons. As that script is right in the smb.conf man page I'd certainly expect that to work. As one final shot at this I'll post my smb.conf for

LCR with ENUM and DDNS: half the story
Ok, so you've read the Wiki and gotten call routing using ENUM to work (http://www.voip-info.org/tiki-index.php?page=Asterisk%20E164%20Call%20Routing) with your own ENUM-alike domain, e164.example.com. But how do you populate it with data? You can do it manually, but that gets very tedious very quickly. Or you can use the nifty DDNS updating program that comes with bind9. The first thing is

The moving of VNC port from 580n to 590n
On my 'older' systems that include Centos 5.5 and Fedora 12, vncserver is running on ports 580n where n is defined by userid in the /etc/sysconfig/vncserver I just spent a bit of time getting it working on my new Centos 6.3 server and found it listening on ports 590n. When did the change occur? And guess I should test out where it is on Fedora 17...

File System Size Limits?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Is there some limit on the size of a file system which can be shared via samba? I'm trying to set up a file server with a 100GB shared partition and it doesn't want to work. I'm running Fedora Core 4, and Samba Version 3.0.14a-2. The output from testparm looks like this: [root@stitch samba]# testparm Load smb config files from
