R-beta: Dec alpha
R ran find on our Sun until it was stolen. I have now set up R on one of
our Dec Alphas OSF1 V4.0 386. R-0.49 configures builds and runs fine
except that the glm command crashes R. R-0.60.1 configures builds and
runs until a cis entered. I think the problem is the floating point
conventions but before I get in over my head a question
Has anyone used glm successfully on Alphas OSF1 V4.0 386?

R-beta: glm
I am new to R so may well have missed the point somewhere. I would like to
use an exponential error in my generalized linear model. It seems natural
to restrict the Gamma family to do this ( and as one might in GLIM) by
specifying the scale. This does not seem possible in R . Have I missed
something?
Sorry to raise such a trivial point but I am keen to specify the scale

Help ! I am a graduate student in statistics, nearing the end of my
first semester, and recently discovered R, but cannot figure out how to

for a class next semester. Any help

R 1.3.1 on OS9.1?
Dear List,
After my laptop was stolen I (eventually) replaced it with a G4
laptop running Mac OS 9.1 . This also meant I updated to the current
Mac binary 1.3.1. This is pretty wonderful except for one problem.
I normally save R figs as eps files using the Mac OS and then read
them into Latex documents. This no longer works as the legends
overwrite the diagrams. Saving as ps from R also does

Macs and R
I hope this is the right place for my question, my apologise if it is not.
I am a long time Mac/UNIX user and my local machine is a Mac. At
present I run an orphan version of R which a worried out of (*****).
On reflection I guess I'd better not say, but it changed my life. It
is howerver a little out of date ( say 0.6ish)
So the obvious question, do I move to MacLinux or is there likely

I am running some simulations which involve fitting a glm with
Binomial error ( in fact Bernoulli) and logistic link. Running R 0.63

G4-400mhz enough for CentOS 4.3?
It's that time again. I'm stuck with a bunch of older Powermac G4's
that I either need to repurpose or give the heave ho. I've not tried
CentOS on Mac hardware before. Would the following config be suitable
for a (somewhat slow) workstation?
PowerMac G4

256mb RAM
40gig ATA disk
Some sort of dual-head ATI video setup with 64mb VRAM (I've forgotten

[OT] Curly Quotes on a Mac
There''s such a Mac-friendly group here, I thought I might get some
guidance. I''m happily developing everything on my PowerBook, and loving
it. Yeah, TextMate is way cool. But all my clients keep sending me copy
in Microsoft Word format and the curly quotes, ellipses, dashes, etc.
turn into question marks.
This might be overreaching, but is there some way to open the Word

R-beta: "out of virtual memory"
Hi,
We just ran up against a "Memory exhausted" error trying to manipulate a
7Mb data file on R 0.61.1 FreeBSD-2.2.5, so I checked the manpage and
discovered the "-v" option. However, I can only run "R -v 11". Anything
higher gives the following:

New problem with Mac OS X + rails + mysql. Please help!
All,
I am working through the ''depot'' sample application from the

But when I try to create the first table, I get the following error,

Samba, VPN, and Mac OSX 10.4.2
We're having an odd problem with connecting to Samba shares over a VPN
with a Mac client.
We have several Mac clients connecting to a Samba 3.0.10-1.fc2
installation. Prior to upgrading them to Tiger, everything worked fine
both local and over an IPSec VPN.
After upgrading to Tiger, they still work fine when on our LAN. But if
they try to connect to a share over the VPN, Finder hangs.

general questions about R on debian/powerpc
Hi,
I am about to but a laptop, and have narrowed the choices down to a
Dell Latitude 600 and an Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminium (Princeton
provides these models at a discount for grad students).
I am biased towards the Powerbook, and would like to run Debian on it.
I have only used debian on i386 platforms so far. I use R quite
frequently, so I would be interested in your experience of running R

Can't connect to MySQL on another machine
hi everyone
I''ve got two machines here: a Powerbook and a Linux box running MySQL.
The MySQL user privileges seem to be configured properly, e.g. I can
connect to a database using "mysql" from the Powerbook, alter the
tables etc without any problems.
However, I can''t get Rails to connect to the same database. (just a
simple app with one model called "Test"
