R-beta: updating the library index / overriding compile options
Would it be possible to include a new command in the ${RHOME}/etc path, which
updates the Library index (Rd and html) via "R LIBINDEX".
I need it because I use RPM to manage three different R installations (at home,
at the institute and in the seminar rooms). I put all libraries into several
packages, so it is easy for me to update a single library at all these
different places.

Some R-Tcl/Tk-BWidget newbie questions.
Dear list,
Could somebody who is more experienced with the Tcl/Tk interface from R
please help me clarify the issues I've put below with ### --> tags?
Several things go wrong, and it's probably because of messy code, but I
have a difficult time finding out what is the cause.
Thanks very much,
JeeBee.

R-beta: R-0.60.1 on hpux10.2
Hello R-helpers,
I tried to do "make test" , and it is failing:
data()
Error: stack overflow
?data
Error: Stack overflow
data(rivers)
Error: incorrect tag type
R also initially it balked at:
apropos("\\\\[")
So, I skipped it :-)
This stuff is working on R-0.50-a4 that I have.
Anyone built R-0.60.1 on hpux??
Best regards,

R-beta: more model.matrix
I am trying to show some techniques to my graduate regression class.
The textbook mentioned using bootstrap samples of regression
coefficients for assessing variability. I decided to show them
reasonably effective ways of doing the resampling.
The following is a function I wrote to create bootstrap samples of
coefficients from a fitted linear regression model.

I feel like a complete dolt, as I know this question has been asked by
others on a fairly regular basis, but I'm going in circles trying to get
the following to work:
id.prob<-function (tt)

library(mvtnorm)

Makeham<-function(tt)
{
a2=0.030386513
a3=0.006688287

S.t<-exp(-a2*t+a3/b3*(1-exp(b3*t)))

Variance-covariance matrix for beta hat and b hat from lme
Dear all,
Given a LME model (following the notation of Pinheiro and Bates 2000) y_i
= X_i*beta + Z_i*b_i + e_i, is it possible to extract the
variance-covariance matrix for the estimated beta_i hat and b_i hat from the
lme fitted object?
The reason for needing this is because I want to have interval prediction on
the predicted values (at level = 0:1). The "predict.lme" seems to

R-beta: R rules!
I am a long-time Mac user. R is way behind on that platform, which is one
reason why I decided to try out Linux on intel. I have the system set up
and have installed R (using Slackware, which is only distribution my tech
services wants me to use). It went very smoothly, thanks everyone behind
R!
I installed R in the directory
/usr/local/bin/R-0.50-a4/
Not sure if this is a sensible set-up.

R-beta: Pictex and R
Dear R-users
It is me again with my interminables questions...
This time it is about "pictex". I understood that
pictex allows us to put our graph in a latex file
I have try the function:
> pictex (file=...)
and the answer was: "pictex" not found...
Does it mean that it is not an R-function yet?
Thank you for any feedback.

R-beta: RPM and .deb packages for R-0.61
This may have been announced before but there are now both Debian
GNU/Linux and RedHat Linux packages for R-0.61 on the CRAN archive
sites. The master site for CRAN is
http://www.ci.tuwien.ac.at/R/
That site provide a list of available mirror sites. Within the CRAN
archive sites the pre-compiled packages for Linux are located in the
bin/i386-linux directory.
Under RedHat you can install

R-beta: installing the R- rpm in RedHat 5.0 --trouble !!

R-beta: survival4
Hmm... I have the same problem on hpux10.20. I put the additional libs into a
subdir called contrib, and R INSTALL from there. I have R-0.61.1 Alpha Dec21

R-beta: New r-base package for Debian-2.0
I have recompiled the r-base package for Debian-2.0 with readline
support. I still haven't determined why the configure script does
not detect the readline library on one machine but does detect it
on another where I compiled this.
The package is available as
ftp://franz.stat.wisc.edu/pub/R/bin/i386-linux/Debian-2.0/r-base_0.61.1-3_i386.deb
and should appear on the other CRAN mirrors by

R-beta: "A brief history of S"
While writing his '98 Interface paper Ross Ihaka was asking about the
history of S so he could relate it to the history of R. I was looking
at the Statistics and Information Analysis Division's web page at Bell
Labs and went to their technical reports section
http://cm.bell-labs.com/stat/doc/
Sure enough, there is a tech report by Rick Becker on "A Brief History
of S".
