R-alpha: some thoughts about factor()
Dear R-people,
recently at s-news we had a discussion about factor().
I thought you might be interested in some of my thoughts about factors.
Any comments welcome
Best regards

R-beta: Reason for previous message
Sorry if my reply to Jens Oehlschlaegel <oehl at Psyres-Stuttgart.DE>
came "out of the blue" for this list. His original message was about
both R and S and he sent a copies to the S-news list and to
R at stat.auckland.ac.nz. Since my reply capability for messages coming
over S-news is screwed up (local listserv configuration problem) I
have to add addresses by hand to my replies.

analysis of function dependencies / namespacing
I am going to document a 10.000 lines of R code project.
Before reinventing the wheel, has anyone written a function that analyzes
dependencies between R functions?
I am thinking of output like

caller1 calee2
caller1 :
caller2 calee7
:
and I would like to restrict caller and callee to certain positions in the
search path.
My guess is, that a quick and dirty solution is

swap
Hello everybody,
I wonder if there is any swap function in R that does the following:
x <- seq(1,10,12)
x1 <- swap(x)
x1
1 8 3 4 5 6 7 2 10
Thank you very much!

astonishing memory phenomenon
I have a question concerning memory.
I understood that R takes a fixed amount of memory at startup (which I can
influence with --vsize --nsize) and that gc() shows the memory still free of
the total memory reserved for R.
However, if I create a long vector of character data, gc() only seem to
reflect the space needed for a vector of pointers to char, the space used
for the character data itself

uidswap
All,
Could someone explain the purpose of the uidswap functions with
respect to ssh ( the client ). From what I gathered , ssh installs as
setuid root and swaps ids when reading potential key files that may be read
only by root. Also , I think when binding to a privileged port ssh swaps
id. Is that so? What are the consequnences if you do not install ssh setuid
root? ( As far I as know no uid

Swaping out phones.
I have a quick question. I am using Asterisk 1.4. I have a user that has changed phones (grandstream budge tone 200 to a polycom 330). I have changed the sip.conf and extensions.conf. I have also unplugged the old phone and plugged in the new phone. I get the ext showing on the phone, but when I do a sip show peer 5000 the old ip address and phone show up. I did a sip reload and a dialplan reload.

matrices and arrays loose dimension after multiplying with scalar (PR#1979)
A matrix or array with one of its dimensions having zero elements looses its
dimension after multiplying with scalar.
Admittedly this is an extreme case, however it DOES make sense to retain an
objects formal structure after multiplying with a scalar, as e.g. a matrix
with zero rows IS a legal object in S. BTW, the prototype does retain the
dimension.

Macbook DHCP issue.
Hi folks,
A while ago I setup my macbook pro to run TINC to my linux box. It's worked just swell since April. The other day it just stopped working. The connection comes up and everything seems fine but I can't DHCP a correct address.
I followed the old setup instructions that were located here: http://www.tinc-vpn.org/examples/macbook-install/ They seem to be gone now.
When I try and

Script to convert mboxes to maildirs?
Does anybody know of a script of a simple method of
converting mbox mail stores to maildirs? I'm moving
from an old pop3 system to imap and after installing
about half our office with mboxes have found that mbox
does not support subfolders which some people like to
use.
Is there any simple way of converting? I can go to
each individual account and "manually" convert swaping

Rsync 2.4.6 and Hammerd CPU's
Hello -
I'm running Redhat 7.1 Rsync 2.4.6 and am having some problems with the
CPU's getting swammped. What we have is basically an 3 boxes, 1 machine (the
factory) is a where applications store the images that eventually are used
for the site, then the other 2 are the webservers that the have copy of the
images. The person who set the machines up used rsync to move any new images

Calls keep ringing after being picked up
Hi all, using * 1.2.9.1 and this week all of the sudden calls keep ringing
even after they've been picked up... Here's one users summary:
When I pick up the phone, I hear a dial tone and I am able to dial out.
But for some odd reason, the receiving line picks up while the outgoing line
is still ringing.
And the receiving line can hear everything while the phone is still ringing.

USB boot problems on Gigabyte GA-M55Plus-S3G
First, allow me to apologize for taking such a long time to get back
to this small project. I just had other things on my plate. My apology
extends to everyone who has offered suggestions or advice, but most
particularly to Ady <ady-sf at hotmail.com>, who has clearly gone the extra
mile to try to help me get this boot problem worked out.

You get these if you install Debian Wheezy as HVM and then try to convert to

Hrm, odd, it worked when based on the upstream xen-unstable tree.
Perhaps something else is needed against 4.1 for the backport to work.

Right, in this context there isn't really a general case since for
things to work with
