Analysis of poorly replicated array data
Greetings,
I have "inherited" a cDNA macroarray dataset that is structured as follows.
Three different stressors were tested. For each stressor, there are two
treatments (control and stressed). For each treatment, two biological
replicates exist, and these are paired (i.e., there is a stressed array for
colony A and a control array from this same colony). For one of these
samples,

Urgent query about R!
Hi there,
I am currently working on a R programming project and got stuck.
I am supposed to generate a set of possibilities of 1296 different
combinations of 4 numbers, ie. 1111, 1234, 2361, (only contain 1 to 6) in a
matrix form
here is what I got which has not been working as it keeps coming out with
the same number on the row..
The code:
gl1<- gl(1296,1,length=1296, labels=1:1296,

smb_newconn error
Okay, newbie alert.
We're having a problem with a linux (2.2.20 smp) webserver (apache) that is
a samba 2.0.7-4) client. Oddly, both client and server are Linux. (I didn't
set them up)
There are 2 webservers that in theory are set up exactly the same. When a
certain one of them goes live, it generates an error:
smb_newconn failed to allocate new packet buffer max xmit 65535

tuning for samba server
Hi!
anyone knows where to get some info for kernel (maybe via sysctl) and or
samba tuning for high performance ?
I have read all the samba docs available, so aim looking for others tips
besides the tcp tunings usually applied in smb.conf ?
i am setting a server on a client site, with many clients (about 100), and i
am using a real server hardware (an HP netserver with xeon procesor@2.8Ghz,

XFS vs. ext3
(Sorry for cross-posting; I'm not on either ext3-users or
linux-xfs, but I thought both lists might find this interesting.
CC me with any replies or questions. Thanks.)
(The last four paragraphs contain the interesting bits.
Basically, XFS hath kick-ed the *ss of ext3 under conditions
that are, for our company, critical.)

Lockups since upgrade 1.2.3 - anyone else? Any ideas?
Boy oh boy. This blows. I upgraded to 1.2.2 from 1.0.9, and of course had
the timebomb bug. Immediately after upgrading to 1.2.3 we were ok, for 24
hours or so.
Since upgrading to 1.2.3, though, the whole system has locked up twice. Once
on Thursday, and then about a half hour ago. The server would reply to a
ping, but no ssh login, no local console login - just locked up. This ain't
good for

hardware requirements of asterisk
I have been playing with 2 Asterisk boxes for testing purposes, it has
been going very well. The 2 boxes are PII celeron 400 (HP Deskpro) with
sound cards and lan. I have iax connecting the 2 boxes.
For making cals and testing out recorded message for 1 connection it was
working quite well. However, when I stressed it a bit with 2 users
making calls, we started to here voice degradation and

Why noapic acpi=off on new Centos 4.6 system?
I just installed CentOS 4.6 (because I had 4.6 media handy) on a new
system, which has a SuperMicro PDSMi mobo with an E4600 CPU.
I then did yum update to get to 4.7, although I don't think that's
relevant to my query.
I wondered why "shutdown -h" would not power down the system. I then
also discovered that the soft power button did not initiate a switch
to runlevel 0 to do a

Codecs and pauses
Hi all
My * implementation is working brilliantly with only one small fault left to
kill.
I'm using IAXTalk from Telappliant for my incoming/outgoing calls to the
pstn network; if I set my codec to GSM everything works great - no pauses
but quality is a bit poor. If it set the codec to alaw (I think I'm using
the correct one - I'm in the UK) I get intermittent pauses on the call.

ssh: doesn't live well with user-group system
Hi,
and that's another feature request. Sorry if it looks like some kind of
spamming, but our current maintainer was very stressed in the past and
had not time to forward those reports to you and now I help him a bit
out. So thanks for your patience and answering of all my mails with
bugreport and feature-reqeust.

SIP/IAX peers UNREACHABLE and audio loss
Hi all,
I'm having a problem with some Asterisk servers interconnected with
each other using IAX (I also tried with SIP without solving the problem)
Sometimes, with apparently no reason, some peers become UNREACHABLE
(I have qualify=yes in iax.conf) and REACHABLE again as soon as
another qualify test is made.
Our users are also complaining about audio loss during their calls,

My status
Hello list,
In case anyone's wondering why I haven't been replying here much lately:
1. I've been busy working (you know, paid work) on full text search
indexing redesign. That change was a bigger job than I realized at first
(mainly due to virtual mailboxes), so I've been a bit
stressed/frustrated over it. I finally finished it today though, so
that's over now:

6.8 CR Packages
We should have the CR packages, that will eventually be turned into the
full 6.8 point release and ISO set, to the QA team today for testing.
I expect that it will take 1 to 2 days in QA and then those will be
ready for release into the 6.7/cr/ repository. That means that no later
than Monday, May 16th (and maybe as early as sometime within the next 24
hours), the CR packages, including the

Re: Linux EXT3 support? problems flushing?
Paul,
I don't know if this helps but I'm running RH7.2 on ext3 with Samba 2.2.1a &
Quotas, I haven't heard any users complain yet, (300 total users). I don't
believe any of them are using Outlook though, but they are using the Samba for
their Groupwise MailArchive. Hope this helps...

spss, string factors, selecting
Hi,
I am having trouble with a large dataset I am importing from SPSS.
The problem is I have to merge two datasets (which seems to be
working OK) then select rows based on attributes. I have a column
with either blank cells, B or E entered. I want to select all rows
with E. I have other columns with numerical data which I will then do
analyses on.
data[column==" E"] does not

How is the Gauss-Newton method compared to Levenberg-Marquardt for curve-fitting?
Hi,
It seems to me that the most suitable method in R for curve-fitting is the use of nls, which uses a Gauss-Newton (GN) algorithm, while the use of the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm does not seem to be very stressed in R. According to this [1] by Ripley, 'Levenberg-Marquardt is hardly competitive these days' which could imply the low emphasize on LM in R.
The position of LM is, to
