using so-library involving Taucs
Dear R developers, The trace of the hat matrix H~(n,n) is computed as follows: tr(H) = tr(BS^-1B') = tr(S^-1B'B) := tr(X) = sum(diag(X)) with B~(n,p), S~(p,p). Since p is of the order 10^3 but S is sparse I would like to employ Taucs linear solver ( http://www.tau.ac.il/~stoledo/taucs/ ) on SX = B'B. (Further improvement by implying a looping over i=1,...,p, calling

Forthcoming R Conferences
Dear useRs and developeRs, I hope all attending useR! in Dortmund last week had as much a good time as I had and a safe trip home. This email is to announce our plans for forthcoming conferences. In 2009 there will be a useR! in Rennes, France (July 8-10), directly followed by a DSC in Copenhagen, Denmark (July 13-14). We would like to have a useR! 2010 in North America, and 2011 in Europe.

Google Summer of Code 2009
Hi, in approximately one months time mentoring institutions can propose projects for the Google Summer of Code 2009, see http://code.google.com/soc/ Last year the R Foundation succesfully participated with 4 projects, see http://www.r-project.org/SoC08/ for details. We want to participate again this year. Our project proposals will be managed by Manuel Eugster (email address in CC). Manuel

help- samba 2.2.3a "forgot" all installed printer drivers
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 dear experts, our samba server has suddenly "forgotten" all installed printer drivers. of course the files are all still there, just both rpcclient and winXP show no installed drivers. question: is there any way of restoring this other than uploading all the drivers again? (also, has this problem been resolved in 2.2.5?) technical data:

build problems on Fedora Core 1
Hello... I tried to build R-devel today on Fedora Core 1 (with gcc 3.3.2) but I am running into a couple of errors. On the same system R-1.8.1 compiles just fine, as did a previous version of R-devel. This is what I did: # change LANG as default in FC1 is UTF-8 export LANG=en_US.ISO8859-1 export LANGVAR=en_US.ISO8859-1 # get fresh sources and configure mkdir R-devel rsync -vrC

Package surveillance (v0.9-8) on CRAN
Dear R Community, I would like to announce the package "surveillance", which provides methods for the surveillance of count data time series originating from the routine collection of public health data. The package addresses epidemiologists and statisticians working with routine surveillance, but it also offers an infrastructure for developers of new detection algorithms. Implemented

Netatalk connection on Samba machine account - security breach?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 [please cc to my address] Dear Samba and Netatalk experts, I've got a server running both samba 2.2.3a as PDC and netatalk (1.5pre7 as supplied by SuSE73). Samba machine accounts are added to /etc/passwd automatically by the command add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g 90 -s /bin/false -M %u when a NT machine is added to the

Package Install Problem under Win98
Hi, I have tried to install 'tensor' as a new package in these phases: 1. via 'Install package from local Zip-File' in Rgui/Windows98: install.packages("D:/R/_Pakets12MB/tensor.zip", .lib.loc[1], CRAN = NULL) 2. Looking at the library folder, there was now a new entry 'tensor' including some files e.g. \library\tensor\R\tensor.R 3. Then I have done

[semi-ot] Printing w/ NT, automated driver download and modifying printer settings
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Greetings, I've configured Samba for automated printer driver download by all Windows clients. However, I run into the following problem with NT4/2000/XP computers: Every user can connect to any printer and install the driver. (OK.) Only the printer admins can change hardware settings (f.ex. "Can it do duplex?"). (semi-OK.) BUT:

tensor() function and sets
Hi Everyone, To complete the outer() and kronecker() functions in the base, may I suggest the following tensor() function, which allows the multiplication of arrays through sets of conformable dimensions. I am happy to write a help page if required. The code also needs a setdiff() function which prompts me to ask: what about simple set functions? I expect many of us have written our own

gamm(): nested tensor product smooths
I'd like to compare tests based on the mixed model representation of additive models, testing among others y=f(x1)+f(x2) vs y=f(x1)+f(x2)+f(x1,x2) (testing for additivity) In mixed model representation, where X represents the unpenalized part of the spline functions and Z the "wiggly" parts, this would be: y=X%*%beta+ Z_1%*%b_1+ Z_2%*%b_2 vs y=X%*%beta+ Z_1%*%b_1+ Z_2%*%b_2 + Z_12

Hi guys, I need some help to analyzing my data. I start to describe my data: I have 21 matrices, every matrix on the rows has users and on columns has items, in my case films. Element of index (i, j) represent the rating expressed by user i about item j. I have a matrix for each of professions. An example of a this type of matrix is: item 1 item 2 item 3 item4 id
